Opposition targets govt over rising inequality, inflation, lack of jobs

Opposition parties on Monday attacked the Union government on various issues, including rising inequality in terms of income amid rising inflation and joblessness in the country. Participating in the discussion on Union Budget 2025-26 in the Rajya Sabha, DMK MP Tiruchi Siva said the Union Budget shows the government's priorities and intent. "The Budget is not merely a statement of accounts, but one of intent. Our Prime Minister has described this Budget as a roadmap for Viksit Bharat. But the numbers reveal that the path seems only a mirage," he stated. He noted that the Budget was presented as a proclamation of progress but it conveniently hides the realities of the time like stagnant growth, growing inequality, and a sizable demographic dividend slipping off the fingers. "This government's policies have only enriched the privileged few, leaving behind a section of people with joblessness, inflation, and shrinking opportunities," Siva said. He noted that 1 per cent of people in t

Addressing a press conference, Patil said now even those who went abroad are returning and contributing to the nation's progress. Responding to a question, the Union minister alleged that the challenges faced by the nation today are a direct result of the Congress' inability to deliver during its 70-year tenure. "The Modi government has been in power for 10 years. What did they (Congress) do in the 70 years before that? "If they had worked properly, Modi ji wouldn't have to make so much effort now," Patil remarked. He also pointed to the government's free foodgrain distribution scheme for 80 crore people, saying, "Today, the need to distribute 5 kg of free food grains wouldn't have arisen. US unemployment benefit claims jump to 258,000, at highest level in a year

The number of Americans filing for for unemployment benefits last week jumped to its highest level in a year, which analysts are saying is more likely a result of Hurricane Helene and the Boeing machinist strike than a broader softening in the labour market. The Labor Department reported Thursday that applications for jobless claims jumped by by 33,000 to 258,000 for the week of October 3. That's the most since August 5, 2023 and well above the 229,000 analysts were expecting. Analysts highlighted big jumps in jobless benefit applications last week across states that were most affected by Hurricane Helene, including Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Claims will likely continue to be elevated in states affected by Helene and Hurricane Milton as well as the Boeing strike until it is resolved, said Nancy Vanden Houten, lead US economist of Oxford Economics. We think, though, that the Fed will view these impacts as temporary and still expect it to lower rates by (
