Trump administration rescinds curbs on AI chip exports to foreign markets

After a week of promises to alter the policy, the US Department of Commerce has rescinded a Biden-era rule due to take effect Thursday that placed limits on the number of artificial intelligence chips that could be exported to certain international markets without federal approval. These new requirements would have stifled American innovation and saddled companies with burdensome new regulatory requirements, the Commerce Department stated in its guidance. The Biden administration had established the export framework in an attempt to balance national security concerns about the technology with the economic interests of producers and other countries. While the United States had already restricted exports to adversaries such as China and Russia, some of those controls had loopholes and the rule would have set limits on a much broader group of countries. Commerce Undersecretary Jeffery Kessler said Tuesday that the Trump administration work to replace the now-rescinded rule. The Trump

Trump tariffs may have pushed up inflation in April, US govt report to show

Inflation may have picked up slightly last month as President Donald Trump's widespread tariffs kicked in, a trend economists expect will become more visible in the coming months. Consumer prices are forecast to have risen 2.4% in April compared with a year earlier, according to data provider FactSet, the same as in March and down from 3% at the start of the year. Still, on a monthly basis, economists expect that the consumer price index rose 0.3% from March to April, a pace that would worsen inflation if it continued, after it fell for the first time in nearly five years the previous month. Tuesday's report could provide an early read on how Trump's duties will affect the prices Americans pay for necessities and other goods such as clothing, shoes, furniture and even groceries. Duties on many goods from Mexico and Canada took effect in February and could have impacted prices last month. Still, economists forecast the impact from duties to be modest. S&P 500 hits March high as US-China tariff cuts ease trade war fears

Stocks are surging on Wall Street after China and the United States announced a 90-day truce in their trade war. They agreed to take down most of their tariffs that economists warned could start a recession and create shortages on US store shelves. The S&P 500 was 2.7 per cent higher in early trading Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 981 points, or 2.4 per cent, and the Nasdaq composite was 3.7 per cent higher. Crude oil prices jumped because a global economy less weakened by tariffs would be hungrier for fuel. The value of the dollar climbed against other currencies and Treasury yields rose.

US firm Vast keen to use Indian rockets for rides to planned space station

US-based company Vast, planning to launch the world's first commercial space station next year, has evinced interest in using Indian rockets to transport crew members to its orbital laboratory. Vast CEO Max Hoat met the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) leadership team on the sidelines of the Global Space Exploration Conference here to discuss possible collaborations in the area of space technology. The space-habitation company is in the race to build a space station that will be the successor to the International Space Station, which will be retired by 2031. The California-based company plans to launch Haven-1, a single-module space station, on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in May 2026. "Right now, we are on track with our launch for May 2026," Hoat told PTI in an interview. Vast plans to conduct a series of tests on the space station, before flying astronauts to the orbital laboratory by July next year. The first module of Haven-2, a much larger space station, is expected to

1 killed, 32 injured in collision of bus, SUV on Los Angeles area freeway

One person was killed and 32 people were injured, including two critically, when a tour bus and a sport utility vehicle collided on a Los Angeles area freeway early Sunday, officials said. The lone occupant of the SUV died after the vehicle became engulfed in flames following the crash just after 5 am in the Hacienda Heights area, about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown LA, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release. CHP Officer Zachary Salazar said 32 people were taken to hospitals, including the two in critical condition. He said the remaining people transported had injuries ranging from moderate to minor. A passenger on the bus, Joe Runnel, told KTLA-TV that people were begging for mercy in the moments after the crash that closed two lanes of State Route 60 for several hours. I was thrown from the back seat of the bus to the floor about three or four seats down, Runnel said. Glass was on me there was a lot of hollering. The preliminary investigation suggests that the
