Arizona guv vetoes bill mandating local officials' help with immigration

Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs on Friday vetoed a Republican-backed bill intended to support the Trump administration's immigration crackdown by requiring local and state officials in Arizona to cooperate with federal enforcement efforts. Under the proposal, local and state officials couldn't prohibit or restrict cooperation with federal immigration efforts or block the use of federal databases and grant funds related to immigration enforcement. It also would force cooperation on immigration detainers requests from the federal government to hold onto people already in state custody until immigration authorities could pick them up. Supporters say the measure is needed to ensure federal authorities can safely and more easily take custody of immigrants, rather than having to track them down later after they have already been released from state prisons or county jails. Opponents say the state should leave immigration enforcement to the federal government and that the cooperation require

Iran seeks Russia's support ahead of Rome talks on nuclear deal with US

Iran on Friday sought support from Russia over a possible deal with Washington over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear programme, ahead of a second round of talks this weekend in Rome. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he briefed his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on the first round of talks in Oman last week and praised Russia's role in Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers that led to lifting of sanctions in return for Tehran's cap on its nuclear activities. We are hopeful, and we expect Russia to continue its supportive role in any new agreement, Araghchi said in a joint news conference with Lavrov in Moscow. The 2015 nuclear deal collapsed with Trump's unilateral withdrawal while Iran abandoned all limits on its nuclear programme, and enriches uranium to up to 60% purity near weapons-grade levels of 90%. Follow the law or face deportation: Trump admin warns int'l students

Students attempting to go against US laws will face the consequences, including deportation, the country's state department has warned. In a virtual interview with PTI, US Department of State spokesperson Margaret MacLeod said the Trump administration was rigorously enforcing immigration laws, including the Immigration and Nationality Act and the Alien Registration Act. "If you follow the law, America offers opportunities. But those who violate the law will face the consequences," MacLeod told PTI Videos on a question related to the issues faced by Indian students in various US universities. Indian students in the US are grappling with a growing threat of deportation as authorities cancel F-1 visas over a range of issues -- from participation in pro-Palestinian protests to minor legal infractions. During his weekly press briefing on Thursday, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "We are aware that several Indian students have received communication from t

US Vice President JD Vance arrived in Rome on Friday for meetings with the Vatican No. 2 and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, fresh off the Italian leader's visit to the White House a day earlier. Meloni, who has positioned herself as a bridge between the US and Europe, received praise from President Donald Trump for her crackdown on migration during a meeting at the Oval Office on Thursday. Vance, who attended the meetings, was scheduled to meet with the Italian leader Friday in Rome and planned to attend Easter weekend events at the Vatican. He was scheduled to meet with the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the White House said. No meeting with Pope Francis was announced. US to pull 600 troops from Syria, leaving fewer than 1,000 to fight IS

The US will withdraw about 600 troops from Syria, leaving fewer than 1,000 to work with Kurdish allies to counter the Islamic State group, a US official said Thursday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss details not yet announced publicly. The US troops have been critical not only in the operations against the Islamic State but as a buffer for the Kurdish forces against Turkey, which considers them to be aligned with terror groups. President Donald Trump tried to withdraw all forces from Syria during his first term, but he met opposition from the Pentagon because it was seen as abandoning allies and led to the resignation of former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis. The departure of the 600 troops will return force levels to where they had been for years, after the US and its allies waged a multiyear campaign to defeat IS. The US had maintained about 900 troops in Syria to ensure that the IS militants did not regain a foothold, but also as a hedge to prevent ...
