Additional 25% tariff imposed by Trump on India comes into effect

The additional 25 per cent tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on India for its purchases of Russian oil came into effect Wednesday, bringing the total amount of levies imposed on New Delhi to 50 per cent. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in a draft order published on Monday, said the increased levies would hit Indian products that are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 am eastern daylight time on August 27, 2025. Trump had announced reciprocal tariffs of 25 per cent on India that came into effect on August 7, when tariffs on about 70 other nations also kicked-in. On August 7, the US president announced doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent for India's purchases of Russian crude oil, but gave a 21-day window to negotiate an agreement. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted he can't compromise on the interests of farmers, cattle-rearers, small-scale industries, cautioning "pressure on us may .

Don't buy refined petro products from India if you have problem: Jaishankar

India Saturday forcefully rejected Washington's criticism that it is running a "profiteering scheme" by buying discounted Russian crude oil with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asserting that New Delhi's procurement has been in national and global interest. Jaishankar emphatically said that India will continue to take decisions on the matter independently and suggested that the previous US administration was supportive of New Delhi's procurement of Russian energy as it stabilises the oil market. "It's funny to have people who work for a pro-business American administration accusing other people of doing business," Jaishankar said. "That's really curious. If you have a problem buying oil or refined products from India, don't buy it. Nobody forces you to buy it. But Europe buys, America buys, so you don't like it, don't buy it," he said. His comments at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum came when asked about US officials criticising India on its energy ties with ...

India's seafood industry can explore alternative markets to cushion the impact of higher US tariffs on a range of Indian goods, D V Swamy, chairman of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), said on Saturday. Swamy noted that the country's marine products sector has repeatedly shown resilience in the face of crises. He said the Centre has identified Russia, the UK, the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, the Middle East and South Korea as new focus markets for seafood exports. Let's not call it an obstacle; it's actually an opportunity. We learn from challenges and improve with each of them, Swamy said at a press conference on the eve of MPEDA's 53rd anniversary. The agency is an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, mandated to promote India's seafood exports. The MPEDA chief said the sector has been adaptive throughout its five-decade history and stressed the need to diversify both markets and seafood varieties. Ecuador is one countr
