Mike Waltz signals continuation of Biden policies, calls India key partner

Incoming national security advisor Mike Waltz has indicated that the Trump administration will continue with several elements of Joe Biden's policies, particularly on China and India, which he described as a critical partner for the US in the future. Waltz would take charge as National Security Advisor to Donald Trump when he is sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on January 20. Making an appearance at the US Institute of Peace (USIP), Waltz identified China as the greatest adversary of the United States and India as a critical partner of the US in the future. The President-elect firmly believes we can avoid conflict with the Chinese Communist Party because they need our markets. We are going to use the leverage in a way that's in line that we have that's in line with our national security while we still can, Waltz said at the panel discussion with the outgoing NSA Jake Sullivan. Waltz was quick to point out to the moderator Stephen J Hadley, former national securit

US removes long standing restrictions on three Indian nuclear entities

In a significant move, the US on Wednesday removed restrictions on three Indian nuclear entities, over a week after NSA Jake Sullivan announced that Washington was finalising steps to "remove" hurdles for civil nuclear partnership between Indian and American firms. The three entities are Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Centre (IGCAR) and the Indian Rare Earths (IRE), according to the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). In an address at the IIT-Delhi last week, Sullivan said the US will remove regulations that have prevented cooperation between Indian nuclear entities and American companies. The removal of the three key Indian entities is being seen as an attempt by the outgoing Biden administration to facilitate the implementation of the landmark India-US civil nuclear pact that was sealed 16 years back. The move comes five days ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration as the 47th President of the US. India and the US unveiled an ambitious pla

Govt probe urges action against 'unnamed' person in plot to kill Pannun

A high-powered enquiry committee set up by the government has recommended legal action against an unnamed individual after probing activities of some organised criminal groups and terrorist organisations, which undermined the security interests of both India and the US. The probe was ordered after the US alleged there was an attempt to kill Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun by Indian agents in New York in 2023. Vikash Yadav, said to be a former officer of India's external intelligence agency RAW, was named by the US in connection with the failed assassination attempt on Pannun, who has duel citizenship of America and Canada. In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said after a long enquiry, the committee has recommended legal action against an individual, whose earlier criminal links and antecedents also came to notice during the enquiry. The home ministry statement, however, did not name any individual against whom action has been initiated. Th

HCLTech not dependent on H1B, new US regime will hardly impact biz: Exec

The new regime in the US is unlikely to affect the business of Indian IT company HCLTech as it is very less dependent on H1B visas, a senior company executive said. "About 80 per cent of our people in the US are all locals, so our dependence on the H1B is one of the least in the industry. And it is not just now if I look back over the last 4 odd years, we have been pretty locally self-sufficient. "And that reflects in the number of H1Bs that we go through every year. It ranges between 500-1,000 in a year max...so it is minimal dependence," said Ramachandran Sundararajan, Chief People Officer, HCLTech. HCLTech on Monday reported a 5.54 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 4,591 crore for the December quarter. The H1B visa programme allows US companies to temporarily employ foreign workers in speciality occupations. Indian companies have been significant beneficiaries of this programme, particularly in the technology sector. Donald Trump's return to the presidency is expec

India my most extraordinary job, has captured my heart: US envoy Garcetti

US ambassador to India Eric Garcetti on Thursday described his tenure in the country as the "most extraordinary", and said India captured his heart. During his interaction with select media representatives on the sidelines of a programme here, he said the relationship between India and the US holds "endless possibilities". Garcetti, whose term as the US ambassador to India is ending soon, said his stint in the country was the most extraordinary job of his life. "This was to be in the right place at the right time with the right relationship," he said. "President Joe Biden had said India was the most important country in the world to him and if you want to work on the future, you need to come to India. No US president has ever said this," he said. "India US relationship is the defining relationship. All of us know that building peace is to deter war, to make sure it doesn't occur. Borders should be sacred and sacrosanct. Rules are the only way to keep peace," he said. Hailing the

India, USA united in fight against terrorism, says US ambassador Garcetti

US ambassador to India Eric Garcetti on Thursday said India and America are united in the fight against terrorism, and expressed satisfaction over the "increased" intelligence sharing and cooperation between the two countries to bring perpetrators to justice. The American Dream and the Indian Dream are flip sides of the same coin, he said, adding that the relationship between the two countries was "multiplicative" and that they have responsibility beyond their borders. Addressing a gathering on 'Peace and the role of the US - India defence and security partnership' here, Garcetti said many innocent lives were being snuffed out due to terrorism. "Both the countries face the threat from terror organisations like Lashkar, Jaish, ISIS. These terror outfits operate across borders and we must meet this threat together. Our collaboration extends beyond fighting terrorism but we must also see how we can de-radicalise communities," he said. "We have to invest in opportunities in some of our
