External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio here on Monday for bilateral discussions, as the high-level 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) kicks in. This will be the first face-to-face meeting between Rubio and Jaishankar following President Donald Trump's imposition of an additional 25 per cent tariff on India for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil, taking the total levies imposed on India by the Trump White House to 50 per cent. According to the daily schedule issued by the State Department on Sunday, Rubio will meet Jaishankar in New York City on Monday morning. With the India-US trade talks moving in the right direction, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to visit Washington soon, sources said. The visit comes in the backdrop of recently concluded daylong discussions here between US Chief Negotiator Brendan Lynch and his Indian counterpart Rajesh Agrawal on the proposed bilateral trade agreement. "The commerce minister's visit is likely soon... may be in the next few days... for the trade talks," they said. On September 16, the commerce ministry stated that daylong discussions with the visiting US team on a bilateral trade deal were positive, and both sides agreed to push for an early and mutually beneficial conclusion of the agreement. "It was decided to intensify efforts to achieve early conclusion of a mutually beneficial trade agreement," the ministry said in a statement after a seven-hour meeting with US officials. The talks were important as the US has imposed a steep 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods. The vi

The decision of the US government to revoke the 2018 sanctions waiver with regard to strategic Iranian port of Chabahar will have implications for India, which is engaged in the development of a terminal at the port. The US Department of State in a statement said that in consistent with President Trump's maximum pressure policy to isolate the Iranian regime, it has revoked the sanctions exception issued in 2018 under the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act (IFCA) for Afghanistan reconstruction assistance and economic development, effective September 29, 2025. "Once the revocation is effective, persons who operate the Chabahar Port or engage in other activities described in IFCA may expose themselves to sanctions under IFCA," the statement said. India will be impacted by this decision, as it is involved in development of a terminal at the Chabahar port on the Gulf of Oman. India's exports to the US are falling as high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have started eroding the price competitiveness of domestic goods in Washington, think tank GTRI said on Wednesday. August shipments to the US plunged to USD 6.7 billion, down 16.3 per cent from July -- the steepest monthly fall of 2025 -- as US duties doubled to 50 per cent by month's end, it said. In July, exports dipped 3.6 per cent to USD 8 billion over June. The month of June had also seen a decline of 5.7 per cent to USD 8.3 billion over May. May 2025 was the last month of growth, as shipments to the US rose 4.8 per cent over April to USD 8.8 billion. In April, exports to the US stood at USD 8.4 billion. "The slide in exports closely tracks the rapid escalation of tariffs," Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) Founder Ajay Srivastava said. Until April 4, Indian goods entered the US at normal MFN (most favoured nation) rates. From April 5, Washington imposed a universal 10 per cent tar
