Counting of votes cast during the two phases of the urban local bodies' polls and the by-election to two assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh began on Saturday morning. Officials said most of the preparations are complete and the counting started at 8 am on Saturday. They said instructions were given to arrange cold water and 'sharbat' at the counting centres in view of the rising heat. The State Election Commission (SEC) said that 353 counting centres have been set up. Lucknow District Magistrate Suryapal Gangwar and Joint Commissioner of Police Upendra Agrawal reviewed the preparations in the state capital. The bypolls were held in the Suar assembly seat in Rampur district and Chhanbey (SC) in Mirzapur district on May 10. A day before the counting of votes in urban local body polls in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party on Friday alleged the election manual was amended recently, deleting from it portions related to declaration of votes received by candidates after every round of counting. The party accused the BJP of hatching a "conspiracy" to "influence" the results in the local body polls and change the mandate of the people. Manoj Pandey, the chief whip of the SP in the Legislative Assembly, said that according to the election manual for local body polls, there is a provision of writing on a blackboard the details of valid votes obtained by a candidate, invalid votes and the total votes polled on a blackboard after every round of counting. Besides, they have to immediately declare these details, feed the data online and also announce the same through public address system, he said. A voter turnout of 49.33 per cent was recorded till 5 pm on Thursday in the final phase of the urban local body polls in Uttar Pradesh, with the Samajwadi Party alleging that supporters of the ruling BJP were indulging in election malpractices, especially in Kannauj. A Kanpur-bound private bus from Ahmedabad carrying 45 passengers dashed into a divider and overturned on the Kanpur-Jhansi National Highway on Thursday morning leaving the conductor dead and 35 people injured, police said. Kalpi police circle officer Devendra Pachauri said the accident occurred near Sai Mandir under Kotwali Atta area. The deceased conductor has been identified as Babban (45). Some passengers with minor injuries were discharged after administering first aid at Community Health Centre in Kalpi while those seriously injured were sent to the district hospital, the police official added.

Polling for the by-election to Jharsuguda assembly seat in Odisha began at 7 am on Wednesday amid tight security measures, officials said. A total of 2,21,070 people are eligible to exercise their franchise in 253 booths. There are 1,10,320 male electors, 1,10,687 women and 63 of the third gender. Polling will continue till 6 pm. As the multilingual film totted up box office numbers and controversy raged, the Supreme Court said it will hear on May 15 a plea against the Kerala High Court order refusing to stay its release. The Uttar Pradesh government will make "The Kerala Story" tax-free in the state, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Tuesday. The announcement comes days after the Madhya Pradesh government said it will give tax-free status to the film in the state. "'The Kerala Story' to be made tax free in Uttar Pradesh," Adityanath said from his official Twitter handle. Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav on Monday held a roadshow in parts of the city to seek votes for party's mayoral candidate Vandana Bajpai in the civic body polls and said people have started realising that it was only her party which could truly work for the state's development.
