Atiq Ahmad benami assets case: I-T department summons BPL cardholder

Widening its probe into the alleged benami assets amassed by slain gangster-politican Atiq Ahmad, the Income Tax department has issued fresh summons to a BPL cardholder security guard, who allegedly held about six land parcels worth crores in Uttar Pradesh, and recorded the statements of those linked to him. An Income Tax department team also reached the home of the security guard -- Suraj Pal -- in Prayagraj district's Pipalgaon and handed over the summons issued in his name to his family members. Pal is stated to be absconding and, according to the statement given to the department by his daughter, the family does know his whereabouts. The Income Tax department has identified Pal as the 'benamidar (in whose name a benami property is standing)' of more than 40 land assets of Atiq Ahmad and his gang members. Ahmad (60) and his brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf were shot dead by three assailants in April when they were being taken for a health checkup by police in Prayagraj. Pal is

Signages, non-functional underpasses along e-ways slowing down MotoGP prep

As India gears up to host its maiden MotoGP event at the Buddha International Circuit in Greater Noida in a fortnight, the "sluggish pace" of raising infrastructure at the local level has officials worried. Sources told PTI that hundreds of signages and over two dozen cameras are yet to be installed along the highways that pass through Noida and Greater Noida up to the venue along the Yamuna Expressway. Some signages installed already have lost visibility due to trees or need modification. Besides these, two key underpasses -- at Advant Navis building and at Sector 96 -- on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway are non-functional while several road patches require resurfacing. "The concerns have been raised with the three local authorities -- the Noida Authority, Greater Noida Authority and the Yamuna Expressway Authority -- for the works related to their areas. The Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration has also been apprised of the concerns," a senior officer privy to the MotoGP

Court grants 8 more weeks to ASI to complete Gyanvapi mosque's survey

A Varanasi court on Friday granted eight more weeks to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to complete the scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex and submit its report, government counsel Rajesh Mishra said. District Judge A K Vishvesh dismissed the mosque management committee's objection and provided the additional time to the ASI, Mishra said. The ASI is carrying out a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque premises, next to Kashi Vishwanath temple here, to determine whether the 17th-century mosque was constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple. The survey began after the Allahabad High Court upheld a Varanasi district court order and ruled that the step is "necessary in the interest of justice" and will benefit both the Hindu and Muslim sides. Advocate of the Hindu side Madan Mohan Yadav said the court had earlier given time till September 4 to survey the Gyanvapi complex except the Wazoo khana and submit its report. Over 49% electorate till 5 pm in Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi assembly bypoll

More than 49 per cent of the electorate in Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi assembly constituency cast their votes till 5 pm for the bypoll on Tuesday, the first electoral showdown in the state after the formation of the opposition INDIA bloc. Officials said voting being held at 455 polling stations was supposed to conclude at 6 pm but voters present at the polling centres till 6 pm were allowed to cast their votes. The bypoll was necessitated following the resignation of Dara Singh Chauhan, who had won the seat in the 2022 UP Assembly polls, from the Samajwadi Party in July. He returned to the BJP and was selected by the party to contest the bypoll. The SP has fielded Sudhakar Singh for the by-election. The Akhilesh Yadav-led party has alleged misuse of official machinery in the bypoll and has written to the Election Commission on the matter. It was alleged that Muslim voters were being prevented from exercising their franchise in some places. Till 5.00 pm, 49.42 per cent of votes polled, t

Gyanvapi management opposes ASI plea for more time to complete survey

The Gyanvapi mosque management committee has objected to the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) seeking eight more weeks to complete the survey of the complex. The Varanasi district court had on July 21 directed the ASI to conduct a "detailed scientific survey" - including excavations, wherever necessary -- to determine if the Gyanvapi mosque located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple is built upon a temple. The Muslim side in the case has claimed the ASI is digging in the basement and other places in the Gyanvapi complex without permission, and is removing the debris next to the western wall, endangering the structure. Government counsel Rajesh Mishra said the ASI has given an application in the court of District Judge A K Vishvesh seeking an eight-week extension for the survey. The Anjuman Intejamia Masjid Committee filed its objection on Monday. According to Mishra, the Muslim side has objected to the ASI seeking extra time for the removal of debris and garbage and argued tha
