North Korea slams Bolton for 'stupid' remarks: KCNA

A senior North Korean official slammed US National Security Advisor John Bolton on Saturday, accusing him of making "stupid" comments on stalled denuclearisation talks and warning "nothing good" would come of them. Bolton is the second, top ranking US politician to be criticised by Pyongyang in recent days, after it labelled Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as "reckless" Thursday, demanding his removal from talks over the North's banned nuclear programme. Those comments came hours after the isolated state claimed to have tested a new kind of weapon. Pyongyang and Washington have been at loggerheads since the collapse of a summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump earlier this year. In an interview with Bloomberg published Wednesday, Bolton urged Pyongyang to give a "real indication" it is willing give up nuclear weapons. In comments cited by North Korea's official KCNA news service, Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said Bolton's remarks may have showed a "lack of understanding about

Two teens held after killing of N. Irish journalist

Two teenage men have been arrested after the shooting dead of a journalist in Northern Ireland, police said Saturday. The 18 and 19-year-olds were arrested in Londonderry under anti-terror laws and taken to Belfast for questioning, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said. Journalist Lyra McKee was shot in the head late Thursday in Derry by, police believe, dissident republicans linked to the New IRA paramilitary group as they clashed with police on the Creggan estate in Northern Ireland's second city. Tributes to the 29-year-old were led by her partner, Sara Canning, who said McKee's "amazing potential was snuffed out by this single barbaric act". Detectives hunting the gunman had released footage of the unrest, hoping that the community would help trace her killers. Belfast-born McKee, 29, had posted an image from the riots, accompanied by the words "Derry tonight. Absolute madness". Images of the unrest on social media showed a car and van ablaze and hooded individuals throwing .

IS hits Syria army with deadliest attacks since 'caliphate': monitor

Islamic State group jihadists have killed 35 pro-Damascus fighters in Syria, in what a monitoring group described Saturday as their deadliest operation since the fall of the "caliphate". The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four senior Syrian army officers were among the troops and allied militiamen killed in the desert east of Homs province over the past 48 hours. The Amaq propaganda arm of IS, which lost the last vestige of its "caliphate" to Kurdish-led forces last month but retains desert and mountain hideouts in both Syria and Iraq, said its fighters carried out the operation. Another eight soldiers and militiamen, including two officers, were killed in a separate attack in neighbouring Deir Ezzor province on Thursday night, the Observatory said. The attack targeted a desert village south of the city of Mayadeen, upstream from the stretch of the Euphrates Valley where IS made a desperate last stand for its "caliphate", the Britain-based war monitor said. Observatory chief

Thousands rally in support of Serbian president

Tens of thousands of supporters of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Friday rallied in Belgrade, in a show of force after months of opposition demonstrations. Vucic, once an ultranationalist and close ally of the late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic, has become a staunch pro-European liberal who hopes to bring Serbia into the EU. Marchers, who waved signs with slogans such as "support to Vucic" and "Kosovo loves you" came from all over Serbia as well as from Bosnia, Kosovo, Croatia, North Macedonia and Montenegro. Media outlets close to the government put the crowd at more than 100,000; independent media did not make any estimates. Weekly protests by the opposition began in December against what critics describe as Vucic's slide towards autocratic rule. On Sunday, thousands rallied around the presidential palace in Belgrade accusing him of authoritarianism and muzzling the media. Vucic has rejected the claims. Although it has EU aspirations, Serbia was criticised by the ...

Snakes bar Liberian President Weah from office

Liberian President George Weah has been barred from his office for five days by two black snakes that slithered into the building this week, authorities said Friday. The foreign ministry where Weah, a former striker with the Paris Saint-German and AC Milan football clubs, has his office must be fumigated to chase out the reptiles, which showed up near the ground-floor elevator on Wednesday. A ministry statement said that all operations including the issuance of passports and visas were suspended until April 24 owing to the presence of toxic fumes. "Indeed, the fumigation exercise was triggered by the presence of the snakes," presidential spokesman Smith Tobay told AFP. The sole African to win the top Ballon D'Or award, in 1995, Weah became Liberian president in January 2018, succeeding Ellen Johnson, the continent's first woman head of state. The impoverished country suffered from a 1989-2003 civil war, and a deadly Ebola epidemic from 2014-2016.
