PM at Bombay HC sesquicentennial; IIT(B) convocation tomorrow

The function, to be held at National Centre for Performing Arts, will be attended among others by Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia, Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid, Attorney General G E Vahanavati, Goa Governor B V Wanchoo and Chief Minister Manohar Parikkar, an official release said today.

On August 14, 1862, the Bombay High Court was established under Indian High Courts Act, 1861, enacted by the British Parliament. It was established under the Letter Patent of the Queen of England.

The functioning of the High Court commenced with 7 Judges, with Sir Mathew Richard Sausse as the first Chief Justice from 1862 to 1866. Justice M C Chagla was the first Indian Chief Justice post Independence.

 

The Principal Seat of the Bombay High Court is in Mumbai with benches in Nagpur and Aurangabad in Maharashtra, and Goa. The current sanctioned strength of the Bombay High Court is 75.

In the afternoon, the Prime Minister would deliver Golden Jubilee Convocation address at Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay).

Governor Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Chavan and Union Minister for HRD Kapil Sibal would be present on the occasion

At the Golden Jubilee Convocation, the Degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa will be conferred upon noted industrialist and philanthropist, Azim Premji.

The Prime Minister will also award medals to the meritorious students and give away Ph.D degrees.
