BioSpectrum product award goes to Biocon

BioSpectrum, a specialty magazine dedicated to biotechnology, has announced its bio-awards.
Bangalore-based Biocon's BIOMAb EGFR, a therapeutic monoclonal antibody-based drug for treating solid tumours of epithelial origin, has bagged BioSpectrum's product of the year award. It is for treats cancers of the head and neck.
"BIOMAb EGFR was chosen as it is the first to be clinically developed in India and is the first anti-EGFR humanised monoclonal antibody for cancer to be made available anywhere in the world. The product was chosen as the Product of The Year based on its consistent response in clinical trials initiated in India as well as globally," BioSpectrum Editor N Suresh said in a release.
The other awards announced by the magazine to be awarded on December 21 in Bangalore are Gujarat as 'Biotech State of the year'.
Varaprasad Reddy, Managing Director, Shantha Biotechnics has been chosen the 'BioSpectrum Person of the Year 2007' for pioneering a biotech wave and making a societal impact by launching life saving vaccines and therapeutics at affordable cost.
An academic turned entrepreneur and a co-founder of Strand Life Sciences, Vijay Chandru, Chairman of Strand Life Sciences was chosen as the Entrepreneur of the Year 2007.
The co-inventor of the novel hand-held computer, Simputer, Chandru also co-founded the Association of Biotech-Led Enterprises (ABLE) and serves on the executive council.
Pushpa Mittra Bhargava, former director of Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) was chosen for the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the development of life sciences.
The selection for these awards was made by an independent jury headed by M Ramaswami, Managing Director, Rasi Seeds. Viloo Morawalla-Patell, CEO and Founder, Avesthagen. M Radhakrishnan Pillai, Director, Rajiv Gandhi Centre of Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram; Satish D Ravetkar, Senior
Director, Serum Institute, Pune and K K Narayanan were some of the other members of the jury.
