The Coimbatore food safety wing, under the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, will be collecting samples of Nestle India's NAN Pro-3, a baby milk power product, and move legally on a complaint by a consumer who found worms in a packet.
R Kathiravan, designated officer of food safety wing, confirmed that the department received a complaint along with a lab report stating that a particular NAN Pro-3 package was unsafe.
"We received a complaint on Monday and we are going to do a sampling of NAN Pro-3 on Wednesday, based on the complaint," he said. The department is preparing a chargesheet and would proceed with a legal suit against the company.

Nestle India spokesperson said it is aware of reports that a consumer has reported finding live larvae in a package of NAN Pro-3. "We have not been contacted by the consumer or the authorities in relation to this matter," said the spokesperson.
"We have in place strict food quality and safety procedures, including pest control and quality checks at the different stages of our manufacturing and storage process. Moreover, our manufacturing technology excludes the possibility of insects living and surviving in sealed packages. Shortly before the package is sealed, any remaining oxygen is completely removed as part of the manufacturing process to maintain the product's freshness and nutritional value," the company added.
"We always take such reports seriously and we are making every effort to obtain the information we need in order to investigate this consumer complaint," it said.
According to reports, a K Prem Ananth, from Coimbatore, fed NAN Pro-3 milk powder to his child after which the infant was affected with skin allergy.
Food safety officials, however, did not rule out a possibility that the contamination could have happened after the packet was opened. The authority will collect samples from different places in Coimbatore in the coming days and would conduct tests.
"Based on the lab results, we are planning to file a case," said Kathiravan.
