Mayawati to continue support to the UPA for now
The Supreme Court made it clear that it had not barred the CBI from probing the disproportionate case against her

The BSP will continue to render outside support to UPA for the time being. BSP supremo Mayawati today speaking to reporters after the party’s National Executive meeting clarified that as the party had authorised her to take a final decision, she would be doing so later after deliberating on the issue at length. Political analysts are of the view that Mayawati’s decision is inextricably connected with the ongoing disproportionate assets case in the apex court against being probed by the CBI.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court made it clear that it had not barred the CBI from probing the disproportionate case against the former UP chief minister Mayawati.
“It now remains to be seen whether the CBI goes ahead and revives the case against her; if it does so it is sure to add a fresh twist to the political developments,” said a senior political analyst.
Mayawati had announced earlier that a final decision regarding constinuation of support would be taken by the BSP's national executive and parliamentary board, but decided to postpone it at the last moment, saying that she needed to give it considerable thought.
While this has come a sign of reprieve for the UPA, the latter will do all it can to keep her in good humour. As Rajeev Shukla, MoS Parliamentary Affairs told reporters, “We will try and allay any apprehensions she might have. After all the BSP is our ally.”
Keeping up the pressure on the UPA, Mayawati again reiterated her threat of early elections, asking her party workers to get ready for snap polls at a massive rally in Lucknow on Tuesday, to commemorate the death anniversary of its founder Kanshi Ram.
After the Trinamool Congress pulled out its support to the UPA, the coalition has been afloat bolstered by the support of the BSP and the Samajwadi party SP from the outside. Mayawati’s BSP has 21 MPs in the Lok Sabha and the Samajwadi party has 22 MPs. SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav had recently made his stand clear, stating that he was supporting the UPA as he wanted to keep communal forces at bay.
