'Salam Cinema' Screening Opens Mohsen Makhmalbaf Retro

Retrospective of Iranian Film maker Mohsen Makhmalbaf opened at 45thIFFI with the screening of his film 'Salam Cinema'. Speaking to audience on the occasionMohsen Makhmalbaf revealed that this film dedicated to the Centenary of Cinema was made in eleven days. The penetrating exploration of social realities can be seen in the disturbingly self-reflexive 'SalamCinema' (1994)-the cinema verite-style account of an audition that turns into a meditation on the corruption of power.

Eight of his films 'Daddy's school', 'The Day I became a Woman', 'Kandahar', 'A Moment of Innocence', 'Salaam Cinema', 'Sex and Philosophy', 'The Silence' and 'Time of Love' are being screened under Retro at 45th IFFI.

Born in 1957in Southern Tehran, Mohsen Makhmalbaf dropped out of school to join the fight against the Shah's regime.He was arrested when only 17 and was serving five-year sentence when 1979 revolution brought an Islamic regime to power.The revolution that freed him from prison also unleashed his creative energies.He turned to writing novels and stage plays, and in 1982 made his first film 'Nasouh Repentance'.

The 45th International Film Festival of India opened with his film'The President'.
