A sharp sell-off in the stock market wiped out over Rs three lakh crore from total investors' wealth on Friday after the Sensex and the Nifty lost over 3% each in an early morning trade as media reports indicated a higher probability of Britain deciding to exit from the European Union.
The market capitalisation (m-cap) of BSE-listed companies fell by Rs 3.36 lakh crore to Rs 98.01 lakh crore in opening deal at 09:16 AM. The m-cap stood at Rs 10.14 lakh crore on Thursday, BSE data showed.
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) S&P BSE Sensex lost 3.5% or 948 points to 26,054, while the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Nifty 50 index plunged 3.6% or 294 points to 7,976 in an intra-day trade.
At 09:26 AM, among individual stocks, Tata Motors and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) lost more than Rs 10,000 crore each m-cap. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Reliance Industries, Infosys, State Bank of India (SBI), Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), Maruti Suzuki India, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Coal India lost over Rs 5,000 crore each m-cap.
