Jewellery Body To Examine Import-Export Trends In Diamonds

The commerce ministry has asked the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council to give an analysis on import-export trends, following reports of differences in the quantities of import and export of diamonds.
Since the past two years there has been an alarming trend in import of rough diamonds and export of the polished ones. While the import of rough diamonds has been continuing at a good pace, the export of cut and polished diamonds has been declining. The export of cut and polished diamonds has declined 45 per cent but there has been no decline in import of rough diamonds.
There are indications that diamonds are now being increasingly used to finance global terrorism, including Kashmir.
