At least two people have been killed and 30 injured as gunmen attacked a university in south central Kenya before dawn on Thursday.
Troops surrounded Garissa University College and engaged the attackers, reported the BBC.
Kenya Red Cross said at least 30 people, most of them with gunshot wounds, have been hospitalized.
Eyewitnesses said that the gunshots went off "like fireworks" at around 5 am, at the time of morning prayers. They added that masked gunmen fired indiscriminately and "from all angles" as students ran around the dormitories to seek shelter.
It's not clear how many gunmen attacked the college campus but an eyewitness said that there could have been more than 10 attackers.
The U.S. embassy in Nairobi posted on Twitter: "We are saddened and angered by today's terrorist attack."
Garissa is about 90 miles from the border with Somalia. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack but it is believed that Al Shabaab militants may be involved in the shooting as they often launch attacks inside Kenya.
The university was set up in 2011 and is the only public university in the region. It has a staff of 75.
