Representatives of the Tamil film industry staged a protest outside the Sri Lankan Consulate here on Monday over the release of an unethical article by the Government of Sri Lanka last week. They demanded the closure of the consulate and the embassy in New Delhi.

The Sri Lankan government released an unethical article on its defence ministry website, stating that Chief Minister of India's southern Tamil Nadu state, Jayaram Jayalalithaa, wrote love letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The article headlined as 'how meaningful are Jayalalithaa's love letters to Narendra Modi' was published on the website, which drew ire of people from Tamil Nadu.

The members of India's regional, Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) and the Workers of ruling party in India's southern Tamil Nadu state, All India Anna Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), also staged protests on August 02 and August 03, respectively.

However, the article was later removed from the website and Sri Lanka also tendered an apology.

The headline and illustration referred to Jayalalithaa writing many letters to Modi regarding the frequent arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy.

Fishermen in Tamil Nadu have been constantly fighting to demand safety from the government.

However, Sri Lanka claims poaching and illegal fishing by Indian fishermen depletes the catches of its own fishermen.
