Bengal and faraway Australia came together at the 24th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) on Sunday to exhibit poster of their iconic films made during the past 100 years.

The first Bengali movie was made in 1919 and Australian cinema was 113-years-old, but the KIFF is celebrating 100 years of film making of both the lands.

Australia is the focus country of this edition of the KIFF.

Australia's High Commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu inaugurated a poster exhibition of major Australian films saying it is aimed at showcasing the incredible diversity, depth and originality of the films of her country.

It was also equally befitting to "bring the historical perspectives of our film-making to Kolkata, given that the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) this year is also celebrating 100 years of Bengali cinema," she said.

On display are the posters of 30 iconic Australian films - from the world's first feature length movie ever made in 1906 - 'The Story of the Kelly Gang' - to contemporary movies such 'Breath' (2017) and 'Mary Magdalene' (2018).

Altogether 26 films from Australia are being screened in the KIFF.

At another event, an exhibition 'Chalchitro', celebrating 100 years of Bengali cinema, was inaugurated at the festival venue on Sunday.

The posters of Pather Panchali (1955), Dadathakur (1962), Ganadebata (1978), Chokh (1982), Shotru (1984) and other films were displayed in the exhibition.

The posters were unveiled at a ceremony attended by Jaya Bachchan, Soumitra Chatterjee, Biwajit Chatterjee, Prosenjit Chatterjee, painter Subhaprasanna and others.

Posters of directors like Sir Birendranath Sircar, Dhirendranath Ganguly, Nitin Bose, Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha were also there.
