The Maras High Court today diretced Tamil Nadu government to consider transferring the Chennai District Collector and the Chennai City Police Commisioner on a contempt petition filed by an employee of a private mill.
The Court had earlier directed the Collector and the Police Commissioner not to disturb workers of the mill at Perambur in Chennai, who had been provided quarters by constructing houses in the "Poramboke" land (land owned by government) on a petition filed by Ilangovan, a worker, who claimed that they had been living in the area for more than 50 years.
After the directon from the court, an order was issued to the Commissioner on May 8, 2014 to provide protection to the workers.
The management of the mill then closed it and sold to another company. However, even after the court ordered the officials to give protection to the workers, the new management demolished six houses claiming ownership of the area and efforts were made to vacate the workers, following which Ilangovan filed a contempt petition.
In his contempt petition, Ilangoan stated that the City Police Commissioner George and the District Collector Sundaravalli failed to "obey' the court order asking to give protection to the workers.
Justice C S Karnan, who heard the case at the Chennai High Court earlier, delivered the judgement in the Madurai bench of the High Court here today, directing the state Chief Secretary to consider transferring both the officials.
