The Gujarat High Court has rejected a public interest litigation which sought a CBI probe into the alleged phone-tapping of about 93,000 people by the state police.
A division bench headed by acting Chief Justice V M Sahai and Justice R P Dholaria yesterday rejected the plea saying that the demand for CBI probe cannot be granted in this PIL and discarded the allegations against the state police.
The PIL was filed by advocate Girish Das, who alleged that illegal phone-tapping of about 93,000 people was carried out by Gujarat police and the state government during a span of six months last year.
Das had also sought to set aside the inquiry panel, headed by retired Justice Sugnya Bhatt, to probe the alleged snooping of a Bangalore-based woman.
Another bench of the HC had on October 10 already set aside the Justice Bhatt probe panel on a plea filed by the woman's father.
