Mukul Sangma's effigy burnt at pro-ILP rally in Meghalaya

Press Trust of India Shillong
Thousands of pro-Inner Line Permit protesters in Meghalaya today burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma during a rally demanding a strong mechanism to contain illegal immigration, affecting normal life in the state capital here.

Leaders at the rally by 13 pro-Inner Line Permit groups protested against the proposed Meghalaya Landlords and Tenancy Regulations Bill, 2013 adopted by the Mukul Sangma government and demanded promulgation of the ILP in the state.

Normal life was affected with business establishments in the posh urban market at Khyndailad area and Iewduh, the biggest market in the state and banks remaining closed.

Over 4000 taxis and buses remained off the roads and expressed support to the pro-ILP groups.

Security measures were tight with the district administration keeping a close watch while local TV channels were prevented from giving live coverage to the rally.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commission Sanjay Goyal had granted permission for the rally.
