Two pedestrians killed as container overturns

Two pedestrians were killed after a speeding heavy container overturned on them on Gokul barrage road falling under Sadar Bazar police station here today, police said.

The accident occurred when the driver of the container in an effort to save an animal took a sharp turn and overturned, thereby falling on two pedestrians, they said.

"Both the persons succumbed to injuries on the spot," police said.

The deceased have been identified as Ballabh Pathak (38) and Mathuresh Sharma (34).

The driver managed to give a slip to police.

The traffic, which was held up due to the accident, was restored when the container was lifted with the help of a crane, police added.

The victims were returning to their respective places after taking part in the ongoing Bhagoria festival organised prior to Holi in the tribal region of Manawar tehsil here, police said.

Five of the deceased were identified as Nandini Balram (44), Sourabh (17), Ambika (13), Akshay (10) and Anil (35), they said.

Police suspect the driver and the conductor of the bus were also killed in the mishap.

Indore Division Commissioner said an ex-gratia of Rs 15,000 will be given to the kin of each deceased, while Rs 5,000 will be given to each injured person.
