Delhi High Court today asked the city government and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) what steps they have taken towards synthetic purification or use of biotechnology to recycle water for drinking purposes.

A bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Siddharth Mridul directed Delhi government and DJB to file an affidavit "indicating what steps have been taken towards synthetic purification as well as using biotechnology to recycle water to provide drinking water to people of Delhi".

The court on February 6 this year had sought an action plan from DJB on recycling the water generated by the capital so as to use it for drinking purposes.

The Delhi government on that date had assured that a plan of action has been or will be drawn up by DJB to alleviate the problem of drinking water shortage in Delhi and it shall be placed before the bench.

The court was hearing a plea PIL seeking commissioning of the 102-km Munak canal which was constructed by Haryana with financial assistance of around Rs 400 crore from the Delhi government on the condition that the national capital will be supplied 80 million gallons per day (MGD) water from it.

On the issue of water supply to Delhi through Munak canal, the court was today informed that after installation of the state-of-the-art water meters, monitoring of water level has been made easy and there have been no problems since.

The meters were installed on the orders of the court.
