Boj Governor To Resign On Friday

BSCAL

Bank of Japan governor Yasuo Matsushita yesterday said he has no intention to seek a position at a private financial institution following his official resignation on Friday. He also said he will do his utmost in the remainder of his term to regain confidence in the troubled central bank. I will do my best in the short amount of time left to regain confidence in the BOJ as soon as possible, Matsushita said.

He also said he deeply regretted the arrest last week of a BOJ official on suspicion of bribery, the first in the history of the central bank.

Matsushita declined to comment on whether he thought Masaru Hayami was appropriate as his replacement with the BOJ. He said, however, that he respected Hayami for his experience and knowledge of financial and economic issues.

The governor said in response to a question that he was not aware of a plan for all of the BOJs directors to step down to take responsibility for the arrest. Matsushita added the issue of supervisory responsibility was basically taken care of by his resignation and by that of deputy governor Toshihiko Fukui.
