Deep Blue Architect To Attend Computer Meet

BSCAL

Chung-Jen Tan, who led the development of IBMs computer Deep Blue which vanquished world chess champion Garry Kasparov earlier this year, will be a keynote speaker at a computing conference in Bangalore later this month.

In his keynote speech at the fourth International Conference on High Performance Computing, to be held in Bangalore from December 18-21, Tan will describe the architecture of Deep Blue and illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of the computer with examples from its historic match against Kasparov, who is rated the strongest chess player in history.

Tan, who received a special corporate award from IBM for his epoch-making contribution in the development of Deep Blue, will also discuss the technological and social implications of the match. The conference will also be provided access to Deep Blue, which is housed in IBMs TJ Watson Research Centre in York town, New York.

The previous conferences were held in New Delhi, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram and have attracted some of the leading researchers at corporations and research institutes across the world.

Among companies who will be represented at the Bangalore conference are IBM, Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics, Intel, Fujitsu and Compaq Asia. Indian organisations include the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science, Wipro and Infosys Technologies.

The other keynote speakers are Dileep Bhandarkar, Intels director of system architecture and work station products; Mick Dungworth, SGI-CRAYs vice president; George J Milne of the Advanced Computing Research Centre, University of South Australia; Kenichi Muira, member of Fujitsus High Performance Computing Group; and Shuichi Sakai of the Institute of Information Sciences and Electronics, University of Tsukuba, Japan.

In all, 77 research papers are proposed to be presented at the conference. According to Prasanna, over 300 delegates, including about 100 from the US, are expected to participate in the four-day event.
