Shipment Of Synthetic Textiles Falls

The shipment of most of the synthetic textiles recorded a decline during 1996-97 though overall exports of textiles registered an increase of 17.2 per cent in rupee terms during the fiscal, according to a data on export growth of textiles.
The decline in export growth of man-made textiles was against a four per cent growth in shipments of all commodities.
The data reveal that shipments of cellulosic fabrics dipped by 55.47 per cent in quantity terms and 11.98 per cent in value terms during 1996-97.

During the year, export of cellulosic fabrics was 2802.09 tonnes fetching Rs 122.82 crore against 6293.04 tonnes earning Rs 139.53 crore in 1995-96.
Synthetic filament fabrics exports also decreased by 14.10 per cent in quantity terms and 11.69 in rupee terms, while exports of polyester blended and mixed fabrics increased by 9.34 per cent in quantity terms and 9.61 in value terms.
During 1996-97, 12814.61 tonnes of synthetic filament yarn was exported to the tune of Rs 496.48 crore against the Rs 562.23 crore earned through shipment of 14917.24 tonnes.
In the case of polyester blended and mixed fabrics, exports increased from 35218.70 tonnes in 1995-96 to 38507.78 tonnes in 1996-97 with the earnings increasing by about Rs 72 crore.
Exports of polyester spun fabrics and other synthetic fabrics also declined by 12.22 per cent and 14.14 per cent, respectively in quantity terms.
The data also reveal that there had been a 22 per cent increase in export of spun yarn in quantity terms and 13 per cent rise in value terms.
During 1996-97, 73,682.43 tonnes of spun yarn was exported fetching Rs 754.23 crore against the 60,294.67 tonnes shipped in 1995-96 earning Rs 664.36 crore.
The data also shows that garment exports made up over 40 per cent india's textile exports earning rs 16,729.24 crore during 1996-97 against the rs 14,806 crore fetched in 1995-96.
The increase in garment export was 13 per cent in rupee terms and 6.9 per cent in dollar terms.
Among other goods, cotton textiles made up 30.3 per cent of textiles exports, man-made textiles 9.7 per cent, silk 2.3 per cent, wool and woollens 1.9 per cent, while handicrafts, jute and coir made up the rest.
In the spun yarn sector, export of polyester yarn increased by over 120 per cent in quantity terms and 67.80 per cent in rupee terms, while acrylic spun yarn shipments rose by 98.92 per cent in quantity terms and 88.89 per cent in rupee terms.
There was a negative growth of exports as far as viscose filament yarn was concerned and its shipment dipped by 43.46 per cent in quantity terms and 37.27 per cent in rupee terms.
Exports of polyester spun and polyester-cotton spun yarns also improved significantly in quantity and value terms.
