Synthetic Textiles Exports Post 17 Per Cent Growth

Exports of synthetic and rayon textiles have risen 17 per cent to touch an all-time high of Rs 4,774 crore during 1999-2000. It thus exceeded the target set by the government by Rs 87 crore, Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC) chairman Ganesh Kumar Gupta said.
Gupta mentioned that the share of fabrics in total exports of synthetic and rayon textiles was at 44 per cent while yarn accounted for 34 per cent and made-ups 21 per cent.
The SRTEPC chairman pointed out that exports of fabrics increased during 1999-2000 by about 5 per cent to touch Rs 2,112 crore as against Rs 2,012 crore during 1998-99. Exports of yarn grew 29 per cent to cross Rs 1,633 crore (Rs 1,266 crore) while those of made-up items rose 43 per cent to Rs 1,005 crore (Rs 705 crore) and fibre exports stood at Rs 24 crore.

Under the fabrics category, exports of polyester filament fabrics increased to Rs 672 crore (Rs 655 crore), while that of polyester-viscose blended fabrics improved to Rs 516 crore (Rs 497 crore).
There was a marked rise in exports of spun fabrics. Both polyester-spun fabrics and viscose-spun fabrics registered a significant rise in exports by 114 per cent and 117 per cent to Rs 171 crore and Rs 61 crore, respectively.
In the made-ups category, exports of shawls/ scarves/ dupattas recorded a 44 per cent rise from Rs 355 crore in 1998-99 to Rs 510 crore in 1999-2000, while exports of blankets/ quilts rose 41 per cent to Rs 81 crore (Rs 57 crore). Exports of sacks/ bags grew 97 per cent at Rs 77 crore. There has been an improvement in exports of other made-up items like lace and lace fabrics which accounted for Rs 23 crore.
Exports of almost all the main varieties of yarn registered impressive growth during the year. Exports of polyester-viscose yarn went up 42 per cent to Rs 361 crore (Rs 253 crore), polyester texturised yarn (PTY) rose 27 per cent to Rs 186 crore (Rs 147 crore) and partially oriented yarn (POY) by 63 per cent to Rs 100 crore (Rs 62 crore).
He observed that the European Union was the main buying region for synthetic and rayon items during 1999-2000 with a share of 34 per cent of exports. Countries in the Middle-East and the Gulf accounted for 28 per cent, while countries in Asia accounted for 11 per cent of total exports.
