Uk Envoy Lauds Bilateral Ties

Indo-British co-operation in defence areas and in combating terrorism has increased during the past few years, David Gore-Booth, the British high commissioner said here yesterday. Speaking at the Chandigarh-based Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development, Gore-Booth said, the historic fact is that both India and Britain have so much to offer to each other. He said education too had benefited by greater co-operation between the two countries during recent years, largely because of a more active role being played by the British Council.
He said the British Council would set up its library in Chandigarh by the end of 1998.
Gore-Booth said Britain can help the government in restructuring the economy adding Britain can also work as a bridge between India and the European Union.

Appreciating the economic reforms process, he said more British companies were keen to do business in the country. He said environment and drugs where two areas where Britain can offer special help.
Participating in the discussion, Rashpal Malhotra, the Centre director sought British assistance for improving Punjab polytechnics.
Industrialist Subhash Bijlani emphasised the need for greater Indo-British collaboration in science and technology to provide value-addition and develop manpower.
