J-K Assembly elections: PM Modi urges people to vote in large numbers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged the people in Jammu and Kashmir to vote in large numbers and strengthen the festival of democracy. Voting began for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, first time since the abrogation of Article 370, as 24 constituencies spread over seven districts of the Union Territory went to polls in Phase 1 amid tight security arrangements. "As the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections begins, I urge all those in constituencies going to the polls today to vote in large numbers and strengthen the festival of democracy," Modi said in a post on X. "I particularly call upon young and first-time voters to exercise their franchise," he said. This is the maiden assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory. It is also the first poll to elect an assembly in the last 10 years. The Centre abrogated Article 370, that gave special status to J-K, and bifurcated the erstwhile state into two UTs J-K and Lad

Assembly polls: Maha elections likely in 2nd week of Nov, says CM Shinde

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said the state assembly polls are expected to be held in the second week of November and seat-sharing among the ruling allies would be finalised in the next 8 to 10 days. A two-phase poll would be preferable for the 288-member state assembly, Shinde said in an informal chat with mediapersons at his official residence 'Varsha' in Mumbai. The Mahayuti government, comprising the Shiv Sena led by Shinde, BJP and the Ajit Pawar-headed NCP, was focusing on development and welfare measures and was getting good response from people, he said. "Elections are likely in the second week of November. A two-phase election would be preferable. Merit and good strike rate will the criteria for seat-sharing among the Mahayuti allies," the CM said. The seat-sharing will be finalised in 8 to 10 days, he added. Shinde said he can see support for the government among women and asserted his was a government of the common man. Focus on deteriorating security condition in J&K: Omar to PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi should focus on the "deteriorating" security situation in Jammu and Kashmir instead of raising the bogey of dynastic politics, National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah said on Saturday. Addressing an election rally in the Doda district in support of BJP candidates earlier in the day, Modi said political dynasties in Jammu and Kashmir have destroyed the region and not allowed new leadership to grow. Hitting back at Modi, the NC leader said the BJP has no qualms in forming alliances with these parties and questioned the prime minister's silence over the death of two army soldiers in an encounter in Kishtawar. "The PM made a speech in Doda... It has not been 24 hours since the attack (in Kishtwar) in which two brave army soldiers lost their lives while an encounter is going on in north Kashmir "He talks about dynasties to mislead people. He should have talked about the present situation," Abdullah told reporters in south Kashmir's Kulgam district.

Maharashtra, Haryana poll results will impact Modi govt's stability: Chavan

Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has said that Haryana and Maharashtra will see a change of government after assembly elections, and it will have consequences for the stability of the BJP-led coalition government at the Centre too. In an exclusive interview to PTI on Thursday, Chavan also claimed that women in Maharashtra will not vote for the BJP merely because of the 'Ladki Bahin' scheme. On 'tensions' in the Opposition's Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance over the Chief Ministerial face, he said the formula so far has been that the party with the highest number of seats gets the post. While BJP-ruled Haryana will go to polls next month, elections are yet to be announced in Maharashtra where the 'Mahayuti' coalition of BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP is in power. "A change in government in these two states will have a direct impact on the stability of (Narendra) Modi's coalition government which rests on the support of Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar. In both states there will b
