Australian PM to visit India next month to boost bilateral engagement

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to make his maiden trip to India early next month with an aim to boost overall bilateral engagement in a range of areas, including trade, investment and critical minerals. People familiar with the plan for his visit said on Monday that Albanese is expected to begin the visit around March 8 and he and Prime Minister Narerndra Modi are likely to travel to Ahmedabad to witness the fourth cricket Test match between India and Australia. The fourth Test is scheduled to be held at Ahmedabad from March 9-13. It will be Albanese's first visit to India after he became prime minister in May last year. Australia go into Test with just one quick but O'Keefe remains bullish

Australia going into a Test match with just one pacer is a rarity but former spinner Steve O'Keefe is confident the Pat Cummins-led side has the capability to bounce back after the innings loss in Nagpur against India. Australia lost the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar series by an innings and 132 runs on a turning track, which prompted Cummins to go with just one quick and three spinners -- Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy and debutant Matthew Kuhnemann -- in the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday. This is the first time in more than five years that Australia are playing three regular spinners, with the previous occasion being the2017 Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram, where the visitors went in with three tweakers -- Lyon, Ashton Agar and O'Keefe. With pacers Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc not selected due to injury concerns and Josh Hazlewood succumbing to a left Achilles tendon issue, Cummins is the only quick who will do all the heavy lifting in the pace-bowlin

This will leave a really lasting legacy for Queensland, Albanese told local radio station 4BC. "It's an investment that will produce a return with increased economic activity, increased visitors ... Queensland is such a fantastic tourist destination and this will really showcase

Australia adds $300 mn funding to improve lives of Aus original inhabitants

Fifteen years after the Australian Parliament's historic apology to its Indigenous people for past wrongs, the government on Monday announced 424 million Australian dollars (USD 293 million) in new funding to improve the lives of Australia's original inhabitants. In 2008, a newly elected centre-left Labour Party government apologized to the Indigenous population for "laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians. The focus of the apology was the so-called Stolen Generations 100,000 children who were taken from Indigenous mothers under assimilation policies throughout most of the 20th century. The apology was accompanied by the ambitious pledge to close the gap in life expectancies between Indigenous Australians and the wider population within a generation. Key measures of disparities between the Indigenous population and others have been tracked annually in Closing the Gap Reports

India move closer to securing WTC final berth, Australia kept waiting

India's innings and 132-run victory against Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy here on Saturday has helped them move closer to a second World Test Championship (WTC) final berth, while extending the Pat Cummins-led side's wait for a title round spot confirmation. Following the win, crafted by the Indian spin-bowling pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, No.2 India are now on 61.67 percentage points as compared to 70.83 of No.1 Australia. However, India still need two more wins from the remaining three Tests of the series to guarantee themselves a minimum points percentage of 62.50, which would beyond doubt knock third-placed Sri Lanka out of contention. If india win all the three remaining matches of the series, they could reach a best possible percentage of 68.06. India's innings win, while extending Australia's wait in the WTC final race, also shut the door on England and the West Indies' hopes of securing a berth in the 2021-23 cycle of the Test

India thrash Australia in first Test to go 1-0 up in 4-match series

India thrashed Australia by an innings and 132 runs inside three days in the opening Test to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series here on Saturday. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (5/37) returned with a five wicket haul as India shot off Australia for 91 in 32.3 overs in their second innings just before tea. Australia conceded a massive first innings lead of 223. This was Australia's second lowest total against India after 93 in Mumbai (2004). Bowling a probing length, Ashwin ran through the Australian top order and annexed his 31st fifer in just his 10th over, before Ravindra Jadeja (2/34), Mohammed Shami (2/13) and Axar Patel (1/6) completed the formalities. Earlier, Patel hit a career-best 84 (174 balls; 10x4s, 1x6) in an entertaining 52-run ninth wicket partnership with Shami who was at his aggressive best in his 37 from 47 balls (2x4s, 3x6s). In reply to Australia's 177, India were bowled out for 400 at lunch on a turning Jamtha wicket. The left-handed Patel, who was .
