Hopeful of new era, Bayern presents coach Julian Nagelsmann

Bayern Munich has won an unprecedented nine straight Bundesliga titles, five German Cups and the Champions League twice in the past decade. It isn't enough. Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidic said Wednesday they wanted to start a new era as they presented new coach Julian Nagelsmann. Expectations are not small at Bayern Munich, said Kahn, who took over the club's top position from former executive board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge last week. Kahn, a former goalkeeper who helped Bayern win 23 titles between 1994 and 2008, said the club had watched Nagelsmann's progress at rivals Hoffenheim, then Leipzig and seen that he has the quality to take teams to the next level. Nagelsmann's predecessor, Hansi Flick, left after claiming back-to-back Bundesliga crowns, and a clean sweep of every possible title in his first season. But well-publicized disagreements with Salihamidic contributed to his decision to leave despite having a contract for two more ...

UEFA declines Munich application for rainbow-colored stadium

UEFA has declined the Munich city council's application to have its stadium illuminated in rainbow colors for Germany's final European Championship group game against Hungary on Wednesday. The governing body said in a statement Tuesday that it understands the intention behind the proposal but must decline this request because of its political context a message aiming at a decision taken by the Hungarian national parliament." Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter's application on behalf of the council made clear it wanted to protest a law passed by Hungarian lawmakers last week that prohibits sharing with minors any content portraying homosexuality or sex reassignment. The law was denounced as anti-LGBT discrimination by human rights groups. Hungarian Foreign Minister Pter Szijjrt blasted the German plan on Monday. "In Hungary we have passed a law to protect Hungarian children, and now in Western Europe they are griping about it," Szijjrt said in Luxembourg. "They want to express this by ...

PSG, Bayern the big names missing from European Super League plan

The new Super League soccer competition in Europe is, surprisingly, missing the names of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. Last year's Champions League finalists were noted absentees from the elite clubs announced in the league's formation on Sunday. Bayern would face difficulties convincing its fans and members, who have a majority say in club business. PSG's Qatari owners could be wary of disrupting next year's World Cup which will be played in Qatar and a lucrative UEFA broadcast deal if there's a civil war in European soccer. The Super League has signed up 12 clubs from England, Spain and Italy and left open three more spots for founder members, who will get permanent places in the competition. Bayern, PSG and Borussia Dortmund have been linked with those founder places. However, Dortmund said Monday that it and Bayern reject the Super League in favor of reforming the existing Champions League. They are both on the board of the European Club Association, which held an .

Bayern's Robert Lewandowski wins FIFA award as best men's player

Robert Lewandowski won his biggest personal prize, showing that a forward not named Messi or Ronaldo can be voted the world's best soccer player. The Poland captain was named the FIFA Best Men's Player for 2020 after his 55-goal season lifted Bayern Munich to a sweep of international and domestic trophies. Lewandowski topped a three-player shortlist that included Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Voting was by a global jury of national team captains and coaches, plus selected journalists and fans. Though FIFA hosted the virtual ceremony in Zurich, its president Gianni Infantino went to Munich to present the trophy in person. Lewandowski joined Luka Modric, the Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder who won in 2018, as the only players in the past 13 years to deny both Messi and Ronaldo the victory. Lucy Bronze was voted the best women's player to give England its first individual victory at the FIFA awards. A Champions League winner with Lyon, she has since joined Manchester ...
