Several firing shots were heard in a village in Jammu and Kashmir's border district of Rajouri Sunday evening, an official said. Police and security forces have rushed to Dangri village following the incident and further details are awaited, he said. The official said it was not immediately clear who resorted to the firing, or whether there was any causality.

BSF effectively guarding against infiltration, smuggling: MoS Nityanand Rai

The Border Security Force (BSF) has been effectively thwarting the growing challenges of infiltration, drugs and arms smuggling and the menace of drones from across the border, Union minister Nityanand Rai said here on Sunday. He was speaking while officiating as the chief guest of the 58th Raising Day parade of the force, the country's largest border guarding force with 2.65 lakh personnel, held in the campus of the Guru Nanak Dev University here, roughly 30 km from the India-Pakistan International Border that runs along Punjab. The Union minister of state for home affairs also said that women personnel are increasingly being engaged in various duties being rendered by the force, which is reflective of the women empowerment vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BSF troops spot two suspects along international border in Pathankot

The Border Security Force opened fire after noticing suspicious movement along the international border in Punjab's Pathankot district, said an official on Saturday. The movement of two suspects from Pakistan was spotted on Friday evening, he said, adding that the suspects were captured at the thermal camera of the BSF. The BSF troops at Paharipur post in Pathankot fired seven rounds, and hence the two suspects fled back towards the Pakistan side, the official said. A thorough search operation was also conducted on Saturday but nothing was found, he added.

Security forces bust hideout in J-K Ramban, recover ammunition, explosives

Security forces on Saturday busted a hideout and recovered ammunition and explosives in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, officials said. Acting on specific information about the presence of arms and ammunition in a remote forested area in Khari tehsil of Ramban, the police and the Army launched a joint search operation there, they said. A militant hideout was unearthed and ammunition and explosive material were recovered, the officials said. The recoveries included 310 AK-47 rounds, 30 9mm rounds, one 9mm magazine, six AK rifle magazines, one grenade, one tape recorder, one handset with antenna and two cassettes, they said. Three battery terminals, one negative photo film, five pencil cells, one plastic can, one pocket diary, cooper wire and one blade were also recovered, they added. A case under the Arms Act was registered at police station Banihal in this regard, the officials said.

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Sunday conferred gallantry medals to 156 policemen and meritorious services medals to five officers on the eve of the 76th Independence Day. Jammu and Kashmir UT administration has announced Jammu & Kashmir Police Medal for Gallantry and Meritorious Service. 156 Police personnel have been conferred with the Gallantry Medals and five officers have been awarded Meritorious Service Medals, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police wrote on Twitter. The police said the Jammu and Kashmir Police Medal for Meritorious Service have been conferred upon SSPs Zubair Ahmad Khan, Ramesh Kumar Angral and Mumtaz Ahmed, Inspector Showkat Ahmad Zargar and ASI Sunil Jalla. J&K DGP Dilbag Singh congratulated the awardees and their families. He also thanked Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and his administration for recognising the professionalism and dedication of JKP officers and jawans," they added.
