Biden considers border restrictions as he tries to reach Ukraine aid deal

Top Biden administration officials laboured Wednesday to try to reach a last-minute deal for wartime aid for Ukraine by agreeing to Senate Republican demands to bolster US-Mexico border policies, with urgency setting in as Congress prepared to depart Washington with the impasse unresolved. The White House was racing to lock in a deal in principle with key Senate negotiators, according to two people familiar with the plans who demanded anonymity to discuss them. A core negotiating group, which has included Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, departed the Capitol Wednesday evening after making progress but without the principles of a deal finalized. As details of the plan emerged, advocates for immigrants and members of President Joe Biden's own Democratic Party fretted about the policies under discussion. Some demonstrated at the Capitol, warning of a return to the hardline border and immigration policies of the Trump era. Congress has little time to reach an agreement on

No infiltration along int'l border in Jammu in past year: BSF officer

Inspector General (IG) of the BSF D K Boora affirmed on Tuesday that the force successfully maintained peace along the International Border (IB) in the Jammu frontier and said no infiltration was reported along the border with Pakistan in the past year. He said there has been a significant decrease in the number of drone-dropping incidents. "There was no infiltration along the IB in the past one year. There have been two to three attempted infiltrations, all neutralised in successful operations. Vigilant troops thwarted three Pakistani smugglers attempting to violate the IB to smuggle narcotics into the Indian territory," Boora told reporters here. Regarding drone activities, he said there has been a notable decline in such incidents over the past year. He attributed this to the dismantling of a drone-based smuggling network earlier in the year. "A big gang connected with drone-based smuggling was busted earlier this year. There is almost nil activity of drones along the IB in Jamm

Indian Army exchanged sweets with their Pakistani counterparts on the occasion of Diwali on Sunday along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. However, there was no traditional exchange of sweets and pleasantries between the two sides along the International Border (IB), the officials said, attributing it to the tense situation following the recent ceasefire violations by Pakistan Rangers that left a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan dead. A BSF jawan was killed in Pakistan Rangers firing in the Ramgarh sector of Samba district during the intervening night of November 8 and 9, the first loss of life on this side after the renewed ceasefire was agreed upon by the two countries on February 25, 2021. Earlier, two BSF personnel and a woman were injured in cross-border firing in the Arnia sector of Jammu on October 26, while another BSF jawan was injured in a similar incident on October 17. N Korea fires cruise missiles, stays mum on US soldier who crossed border

North Korea fired several cruise missiles toward its western sea Saturday, South Korea's military said, marking the second launch event this week apparently in protest of the docking of a nuclear-armed US submarine in South Korea. While adding to its barrage of missile launches in recent months, North Korea remained publicly silent for a fifth day on the fate of an American soldier who bolted into the North across the heavily armed Korean border this week. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launches were detected beginning around 4 am but did not immediately report how many missiles were fired or how far they flew. It said the US and South Korean militaries were closely analysing the launches. On Wednesday, North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles from an area near its capital, Pyongyang. They flew about 550 kilometers (341 miles) before landing in waters east of the Korean Peninsula. The flight distance of those missiles roughly matched the distance between .

India, Bangladesh to initiate 5 development projects for border population

The border guarding forces of India and Bangladesh have taken a "momentous" decision to initiate joint civil works on five development projects along the 4,096 kms of shared boundary which will help the local population on both sides, a senior officer said Wednesday. At the end of their four-day biannual border talks conference that began on July 11 in Delhi, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) also said they are working independently and jointly to "reduce" the instances of killing of Bangladeshi nationals in the boundary area. The issue of these killings, which the BSF has linked to miscreants and smugglers either attacking its personnel or indulge in other cross-border crimes, has been a major irritant between the two neighbours. The 53rd edition of the conference was led by the chiefs or directors general (DsG) of the BSF and the BGB and ended with the signing of a 'joint record of discussions' at a BSF camp located in Chhawla area of the nation

PM Modi has prioritised road development in border areas: Kiren Rijiju

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has prioritised development of roads in the international border areas of the country, especially in Arunachal Pradesh, to instil confidence among people living there. In contrary to earlier policies, now the "last border village has been considered as the first Indian village" for development in the international boundary areas, Rijiju, the minister for earth sciences, said. Arunachal Pradesh shares international boundaries with Myanmar, China and Bhutan. He also alleged that it was "the policy of the Congress to not develop border areas on the pretext that if the infrastructure is created there, China could come and transgress into India's territory". "After the Modi government came to power in 2014, the policy has changed and the last border village has been considered as the first Indian village for development in border areas," the minister said. He participated in a mega rally here on the completio

Growth of order villages resulting in signs of reverse migration: CM Khandu

The Arunachal Pradesh government has placed tremendous focus on development of border areas by improving connectivity and communication and strengthening agricultural activities, resulting in early signs of reverse migration, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said here. "With half of the area and one-third of Arunachal Pradesh's population living in border blocks, the state government has placed tremendous focus on development of border areas through such interventions," Khandu told PTI during a visit to this village along the border with China. For decades, villages situated in the remote border areas have suffered from various challenges like poor connectivity, mountainous terrain, weak resource base and infrastructural bottlenecks, forcing people to migrate to developed areas, according to officials. Development of model village clusters, improving connectivity, strengthening the agriculture sector through 'Atmanirbhar' schemes and 'Mission Krishi Veer' to aggregate fresh fruits and ...
