Rupee rises 14 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee strengthened 14 paise to 71.19 against the dollar at the interbank forex market Thursday on increased selling of the American currency by exporters and banks. Dealers said dollar's weakness against other currencies overseas amid fears of a slowing global economy and US government's record-long shutdown and early gains in domestic equity markets supported the rupee. On Wednesday, the rupee had snapped its three-day losing streak and settled higher by 11 paise at 71.33 against the US dollar. The benchmark BSE Sensex recovered by 28.27 points, or 0.08 per cent, to 36,136.74 after rising to 36,178.36 in opening trade Thursday.

Odisha CM writes to Railways Min demanding Bhubaneswar -Rourkela Shatabdi Express

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has written to Railways Minister Piyush Goyal demanding Shatabdi connectivity between Bhubaneswar and Rourkela via Jharsuguda in the state.In a letter dated January 23, the Chief Minister said: "Though Odisha is a major contributor to the growth of Railways, it still continues without commensurate railway infrastructure and services. Ford posts lower operating profit as overseas losses weigh

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co on Wednesday posted a lower operating fourth-quarter profit as losses in every global region except for North America weighed on results. "It was not a year we were happy with and the fourth quarter continued that theme," Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks told reporters at the headquarters of the No. 2 U.S. automaker, which is restructuring its operations globally. Last week, Ford provided a cloudier 2019 outlook due to tariff costs and uncertainty over Britain's exit from the European Union. Shanks reiterated on Wednesday that Ford's extensive presence in the country gave it a great deal of exposure to the effects of Brexit. Ford said on Jan. 10 that it would cut thousands of jobs and look at plant closures in Europe as part of its plan to return to 6-percent operating margin in the region.
