HDFC Life Q3 profit rises 18 pc to Rs 246 cr

HDFC Life Tuesday reported 18.3 per cent growth in profit at Rs 245.63 crore for the third quarter ended December 31. The private sector insurer's profit stood at Rs 207.32 crore in the same quarter of 2017, HDFC Life said in a statement. Total income of the company declined to Rs 9,303.09 crore from Rs 9,684.46 crore in October-December 2017. The board appointed Niraj Ashwin Shah as Chief Financial Officer of the company with effect from March 1, 2019. During April-December period, the company maintained leadership position in terms of total new business received premium with a market share of 21 per cent in the private sector compared to 18.4 per cent in the same period of 2017-18. Total number of lives insured grew 71 per cent to 3.48 crore during the 9-month period of 2018-19. Overall new business sum assured also saw an increase of 27 per cent to Rs 4,06,943 crore during the same period.

The International Monetary Fund cut its forecast for the world economy, predicting it will grow at the weakest pace in three years in 2019 and warning fresh trade tensions would spell further trouble. In its second downgrade in three months, the lender blamed softening demand across Europe and recent palpitations in financial markets. It predicts global growth of 3.5% this year, beneath the 3.7% expected in October and the rate in 2018.

Nissan to drive in Leaf EV in India later this year

Japanese auto major Nissan Motor Co Tuesday said it will launch its electric car Leaf in India this year as it seeks to take the lead in electric vehicles (EV) drive in the country. The company is also looking at other eco-friendly technologies such as its e-Power vehicles and hybrids for the country. "Leaf is a proof-point (that) we want to bring in India because this is a direction of leadership in EV, we have in the world," Nissan Motor Co Senior Vice President and Chairman of management committee for Africa, Middle East and India Peyman Kargar told reporters here during an interaction. He further said besides the Leaf, Nissan also has plans to bring other electric vehicles to India in future. "We want to have this solution (Leaf) in our portfolio and in the product line up. NMDC may tie up with Stamico for mineral exploration in

State-owned NMDC Limited which is currently developing a gold mine and is in the process of setting up a pilot gold refining facility in Tanzania is likely to enter into a MoU with that country's State Mining Corporation (Stamico), for mineral exploration there, sources said. NMDC is holding four mining licences covering over 38. 8 square kilometres in Tanzania. NMDC has carried out some portion of exploration work and completed it. The Indian miner is also putting up a four-tonne per hour capacity processing plant in the African country. "A high-level delegation from NMDC and the Ministry of Steel met the directors of Tanzania State Mining Development Corporation in the recent visit to Tanzania. Both the parties have shared their knowledge with each other," sources told PTI. Tanzania is ready to make a JV or some sort of understanding with NMDC for developing new mines there. EU fines Mastercard 570 mln euros in anti-trust action

The European Union has fined global credit card giant Mastercard 570 million euros ($647 million) for hindering competition with banks offering cheaper payment fees. "By preventing merchants from shopping around for better conditions offered by banks in other member states, Mastercard's rules artificially raised the costs of card payments, harming consumers and retailers," competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said.

Ex-Nissan chief's bail denied again

A Tokyo court on Tuesday rejected another bail request filed by former Nissan Motors chairman Carlo Ghosn, despite assuring prosecutors that he would wear a monitoring device and stay in Japan.This is the second time Ghosn's defence team had applied for the plea. The 64-year-old business magnate had pleaded to wear the electronic tag, give up his passport and pay for security guards approved by the prosecutors to secure his release, NHK reported.In his first appeal last year, Ghosn said that he would stay in France and would travel to Tokyo for hearing. India's insurance sector set to mark strong growth: Moody's
