Electric carmaker Tesla on Wednesday announced a heavy loss in the first quarter as car deliveries sputtered overseas and a US tax credit that made its prices more attractive was reduced. The California-based company reported a loss of $702 million in the first three months of this year after two consecutive quarters of profit. Tesla produced about 63,000 Model 3 vehicles in the period, an increase of three percent from the same quarter a year earlier but fewer than had been anticipated. The company attributed its disappointing financial results to Model 3 shipping delays, particularly in Europe and China. Overall company revenue in the period rose 33 percent to $4.5 billion in a year-over-year comparison, but fell far short of Wall Street forecasts. Equity benchmark indices opened on a flat note on Thursday with most sectoral indices showing mixed results.At 10:15 am, the BSE S & P Sensex was up 46 points at 39,101 while the NSE Nifty gained 27 points to 11,753.At the National Stock Exchange, some sectoral indices like FMCG, financial services, pharma and realty were in the green.But auto, IT, metal and PSU banks were in the negative zone during early hours of trading.Among stocks, Yes Bank, Grasim, Ultra Cement, Bharat Petroleum and Power Grid gained some ground.However, Maruti, Bajaj Auto, Infosys, ONGC and Bharti Infratel dropped.Meanwhile, Asian shares slipped after a surprise slide in German and South Korean economic data rekindled fears of slowing global growth.Investors were also cautious after the United States told countries buying Iranian oil to stop purchases by May 1 or face economic sanctions.That has pushed Brent crude futures above 74.50 dollars per barrel.

The Rs 25,000-crore rights issue of Vodafone Idea has been subscribed 1.07 times, according to data accessed by merchant bankers involved in the process. Through the rights issue, which ran between April 10 and April 24, the country's largest telecom operator offered 2,000 crore new shares at Rs 12.50 apiece. As per data published by NSE, the rights issue has received bids for 1,109 crore shares. "The Vodafone Idea rights has been subscribed 1.07 times as per data available from registrar to the rights issue last night. This can go up. Final data is expected to be published by the registrar today (Thursday)," one of the bankers involved in the rights issue process told PTI. The banker said that the data published by stock exchanges does not include subscription that goes to the registrar directly under Applications Supported by Blocked Amount (ASBA) facility. He said that the rights issue entitlement worth about Rs 2,000 crore renounced by Malaysia-based Axiata Group has gone through .

A Tokyo court on Thursday granted bail to former Nissan Chief Carlos Ghosn for the second time since his arrest last year on financial misconduct charges.His bail has been set at USD 4.5 million, reported The Japan Times.Ghosn was arrested on April 4 for the fourth time over allegations of misusing the company's funds for personal purposes. Prosecutors alleged that Ghosn had transferred some of Nissan's funds to his personal bank account, causing the automaker a loss of USD five million.The former Nissan chief was earlier released on bail on April 5 following 108 consecutive days in detention, during which he was indicted on charges of an aggravated bench of trust and underreporting his remunerations for Nissan Motors.Ghosn has also been removed from the board of directors of the company, along with partners Renault SA and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, during the prolonged detention initiated by his initial arrest in November.

The rupee Thursday slumped 22 paise to 70.08 against the US dollar in early trade on rising global crude prices and fresh demand for the American currency from importers. However, the dollar's weakness against some currencies overseas and a higher opening of the domestic equity markets capped the rupee's losses, foprex dealer said. Fresh dollar demand from banks and importers weighed on the Indian currency, they added. At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the rupee opened on a weaker note at 70.06 against the US dollar, and further fell to quote at 70.08, a decline of 22 paise over its previous close. The rupee Wednesday had declined by 24 paise to close at 69.86 against the greenback. Global benchmark Brent crude advanced by 0.04 per cent to USD 74.60 per barrel.
