SC sets aside Calcutta HC order of CBI probe in attack on Pramanik's convoy

The Supreme Court Thursday set aside a Calcutta High Court order for a CBI probe in the alleged attack on Union Minister Nisith Pramanik's convoy during a visit to his constituency in West Bengal in February this year and directed fresh adjudication of the PIL filed by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on the issue. The top court also rejected the vehement submissions of Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, for a status quo on the probe into the incident by the state police which, otherwise, will proceed with a lightening speed in view of the fact that they have not given the case files to the CBI as directed by the high court. No we cannot pass such an order, a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J P Pardiwala said. The top court referred to the fresh affidavit filed by the West Bengal police before it with regard to the actions taken so far in the incident and set aside the high court judgement ordering a CBI prob

2G scam: HC asks CBI, ED, Raja and others to file submissions in appeal

The Delhi High Court Thursday asked the CBI, ED, former telecom minister A Raja and others to file their submissions in the appeals challenging the acquittal of the accused persons and firms in the 2G spectrum allocation case. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma said the parties shall file brief written submissions not exceeding five pages. As the counsel for the CBI urged the court to list the matter on an early date when he would argue on the aspect of granting leave to appeal, the judge fixed the matter for May 22 and 23. The matter requires urgent hearing. Fix anytime of the day for conducting day-to-day hearing in the matter, the CBI counsel submitted. Though the CBI had earlier concluded its submissions on the issue of leave to appeal, it will have to argue the matter afresh due to change of the judge. Leave to appeal is a formal permission granted by a court to a party to challenge a decision in a higher court. Earlier, the case was being heard on a day-to-day basis by Justice Bri

The CBI on Tuesday collected voice sample of Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in connection with a 1984 case of anti-Sikh riots in the city's Pul Bangash area, officials said. The agency, which has filed three closure reports so far, made the move after getting "fresh evidence" in the case, they said. He was allowed to leave in the forenoon after the exercise was complete, they said. The case pertains to the riots at Gurudwara Pul Bangash in North Delhi where three people were killed on November 1, 1984, a day after the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. The victims had filed a protest petition challenging the CBI's closure reports in the case. Home Ministry suggests CBI probe against Oxfam India for violation of FCRA

The Union Home Ministry on Thursday recommended a CBI probe into the affairs of Oxfam India for alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, sources said. The home ministry found that Oxfam India continued to transfer foreign contributions to various entities even after registering under the FCRA, which prohibits such transfers. During a survey carried out by the Income Tax department, multiple emails were found which revealed that Oxfam India was allegedly planning to circumvent provisions of the FCRA by routing funds to other FCRA-registered associations or through the for-profit consultancy route, sources said. The survey also "exposed" Oxfam India as a probable instrument of foreign policy of foreign organisations or entities, which have funded the organisation liberally over the years, they said. Oxfam India, which is registered to carry out social activities, allegedly routed funds to the Centre for Policy Research (CPR) through its associates and ...

Excise policy case: Delhi HC seeks CBI's response to bail plea of Sisodia

The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought the CBI's response to jailed former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia's bail plea in the excise policy scam case being probed by the CBI. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma issued a notice on the senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader's plea, which claimed he is "totally innocent" and a "victim of political witch-hunt", and asked the agency to state its stand. "Issue notice. Let reply be filed," the judge said. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested Sisodia for alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 on February 26 following several rounds of questioning. SC asks Maha to file affidavit on plea for CBI probe in Palghar lynching

The Supreme Court has told the Maharashtra government why it should order for a CBI probe into the alleged lynching of three persons in Palghar in 2020 when the state has no objection to such an investigation. The court asked the Maharashtra government to file an affidavit to this effect. "Why should we pass the order that you (Maharashtra) give it to CBI," a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala told the counsel for the Maharashtra government on Wednesday when he said the state has no objection to the submissions of the petitioners that the case be probed by the central probe agency. Earlier, the erstwhile Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government had opposed the plea for CBI probe into the case. During UPA regime, CBI was 'putting pressure' on me to 'frame' Modi: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said the CBI was "putting pressure" on him to "frame" Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a alleged fake encounter case in Gujarat when he was being questioned by the probe agency during the Congress-led UPA government. Shah said this at the 'News 18 Rising India' programme here in response to a question on Opposition's charge that the Narendra Modi government is "misusing' central agencies to target them. The CBI "was putting pressure" on me to "frame Modi ji" (when he was Gujarat CM) in an alleged fake encounter case during the Congress government," he said, adding that the BJP never raised a ruckus despite this. On Rahul Gandhi's conviction in a criminal defamation case by a court in Surat, the home minister said the Congress leader was not the only politician who was convicted by a court and lost membership of the legislature. Instead of moving to a higher court, Rahul has been trying to create hue and cry and blaming Prime Minister Narend
