CBI registers FIR against Loha Ispaat Ltd in Rs 1,017 cr bank fraud

The CBI has registered an FIR against Loha Ispaat Limited and its then chairman-cum-managing director Rajesh Gaurishankar Poddar for allegedly duping an SBI-led consortium of banks of Rs 1017.93 crore, officials said Monday. It is alleged that the then CMD and others entered into a conspiracy during 2012-2017 to cheat the State Bank of India (SBI) and other five consortium member banks -- Bank of India, Canara Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Maharashtra -- by way of availing working capital limit, term loan and NFB limits to the tune of Rs 812.07 crore (approx), the CBI said in a statement. The action was initiated on a complaint from the SBI which alleged that Loha Ispaat and its director(s), guarantors and unknown others have siphoned the bank's funds by doing fictitious sale and purchase transactions with suspicious and non-existent entities. The CBI has arrested the commercial head and production controller of India Ahead News in connection with a probe into the alleged Delhi excise scam, officials said Monday. Arvind Kumar Singh, the news channel's commercial head and production controller, was arrested for the alleged transfer of Rs 17 crore to a company, Chariot Media, handling the Aam Admi Party's (AAP) publicity campaign during the Goa elections through hawala channels, they said. During the probe, the CBI found WhatsApp chats and records of hawala operators, which showed that Singh was allegedly instrumental in the hawala transfers of Rs 17 crore between June 2021 and January 2022 to Chariot Media which was handling the outdoor advertisement campaign for the AAP during the Goa elections, they said. Foreign visits undertaken by former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede, booked by the CBI over an alleged Rs 25-crore bribe demand from superstar Shah Rukh Khan's family to spare his son in a drugs case, will be under the scanner of the agency, officials said. A Narcotics Control Bureau's Special Enquiry Team (SET) had red-flagged alleged improper explanations and apparent misdeclaration of "the expenditure" given by then NCB Zonal Director Wankhede on his foreign visits. These findings were referred by the Centre to the CBI which had registered an FIR against the officer and four others on May 11. "He has also not declared the source of his foreign visits properly. Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood appointed new CBI director for 2 years

Karnataka Director General of Police Praveen Sood has been appointed as the next director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, a government order said on Sunday. Sood is a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre, officials said. He has been appointed to the CBI director's post for a period of two years from the date of taking charge after Subodh Kumar Jaiswal completes his tenure on May 25, they said. In the order, the Department of Personnel and Training said, "Approval of the competent authority is hereby conveyed to the appointment of Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:86) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office vice Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH:85) consequent upon completion of his tenure.

High-level meeting shortlists three candidates for CBI Director's post

A high-level committee comprising the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India and the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha met on Saturday evening and shortlisted three senior IPS officers for the post of CBI Director, sources said. "The committee met and has sent three names to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet which will select one of them for the post," Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told PTI over phone. Sources said that names of senior IPS officers from Karnataka, Delhi and other states were discussed during the meeting. CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal's fixed tenure of two years is coming to an end on May 25. A high-level committee to select the CBI director that comprises the prime minister, chief justice of India and the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha is likely to meet on Saturday evening, sources said. The committee may select the next Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief or give an extension to incumbent Subodh Kumat Jaiswal, whose fixed two-year tenure ends on May 25. Jaiswal, a 1985-batch IPS officer from the Maharashtra cadre and former commissioner of the Mumbai Police, had taken over the reins of the CBI on May 26, 2021. The CBI on Friday conducted searches at the premises of former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede after filing an FIR against him and four others for allegedly seeking Rs 25 crore bribe for not framing Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan in the drugs-on-cruise case, officials said. Aryan Khan was arrested in an alleged drug bust case on the Cordelia cruise ship on October 2, 2021, they said. The NCB, which had filed a charge-sheet in the drugs-on-cruise case, gave a clean chit to Aryan Khan, while an SIT set up by the anti-drugs agency claimed the probe led by Wankhede had lapses. They said the searches were spread across 29 locations across Mumbai, Delhi, Ranchi and Kanpur. It is alleged that IRS officer Wankhede and others had allegedly demanded Rs 25 crore bribe for not framing Aryan Khan in the alleged drug bust, they said. Bank fraud case: CBI searches at Jet office, Naresh Goyal's residence

The CBI on Friday conducted searches at seven locations including the premises of Jet Airways and its founder Naresh Goyal in Mumbai in connection with an alleged Rs 538-crore fraud case in Canara Bank, officials said. The CBI searches were spread across residences and offices of Goyal, his wife Anita, and former airline director Gaurang Ananda Shetty. The agency has registered a new case of alleged bank fraud of Rs 538 crore on a complaint from Canara Bank, they said. The allegations pertain to alleged diversion of funds among other irregularities, they said. CBI asked for report on Sisodia's interim bail on grounds of wife's illness

The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked the CBI to file a status report on a plea by former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, arrested in the Delhi excise policy case, seeking interim bail on grounds of his wife's illness. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to make an endeavour to file the report by Thursday when the court is scheduled to hear Sisodia's plea seeking regular bail. Sisodia's counsel submitted that the medical condition of the senior AAP leader's wife needs urgent attention, and urged the court to release him on interim bail. The counsel for the CBI said it may not be possible to furnish the report on Thursday.
