The Reserve Bank of India on Monday said it has decided to grant "in-principle" approval to UAE-based Emirates NBD Bank PJSC for setting up a wholly-owned subsidiary in India. Emirates NBD Bank PJSC is currently carrying on banking business in India in branch mode through its branches located in Chennai, Gurugram and Mumbai. "The in-principle approval has been granted to the bank for setting up a WOS (wholly-owned subsidiary) through conversion of its existing branches in India," the Reserve Bank said in a statement. RBI further said it would consider granting a licence for commencement of banking business in WOS mode of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to Emirates NBD Bank PJSC, on being satisfied that the bank has complied with the requisite conditions laid down by RBI as part of "in-principle" approval. The Madras High Court has granted an interim stay restraining authorities from releasing NEET-UG-2025 results after hearing the plea of several students who were affected due to power cut at an examination centre here. Justice V Lakshminarayanan, hearing the plea, granted interim stay on Friday and adjourned the matter to June 2 for further hearing. The crux of the submission of the students was that due to storm and heavy rainfall, there had been a power outage at PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya CRPF-Avadi, Chennai, which was their examination centre, from approximately 3.00 PM to 4.15 PM on the date of exam, i.e. May 4, 2025. According to an affidavit of 13 students, there were no backup facilities such as generators or inverters. "We were forced to write the examination under poor lighting conditions, and rainwater entered the examination hall, causing further disruption as we were asked to move from the assigned seats," they submitted. The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday said it seized Rs 1.5 crore in cash after searching the premises of a chit fund company owned by Gokulam Gopalan, one of the producers of the Malayalam movie "L2: Empuraan", in connection with foreign exchange law violations. The federal agency said in a statement that the searches that were launched on Friday ended on Saturday. The action was initiated under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) at one location in Kozhikode, Kerala and two locations in Chennai, Tamil Nadu at the residential and business premises of Sree Gokulam Chits and Finance Co. Pvt. Ltd., the ED said. The searches led to the seizure of Rs 1.50 crore in cash and "incriminating" documents in "violation" of FEMA, it said. In a rare incident, appellate tribunal NCLAT has directed an investigation into an order passed by the Chennai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has directed the President of NCLT to conduct an enquiry into an order passed by it on March 15, 2022 saying it "cannot ignore the fact that the manner in which the order of 15.03.2022, has been passed", appears "dubious" and "not plausible". The facts and submissions in the matter "raise questions over the functioning of NCLT", the appellate tribunal observed while passing the order.
