BJP woos tribals with hope to win high-stakes Chhattisgarh assembly polls

As Chhattisgarh gears up for the assembly elections next month, the opposition BJP in the state faces an uphill task to win the support of tribal population, that is said to have significantly influenced the poll outcome in the past. In the 2018 state polls, the BJP suffered a huge setback in tribal-dominated seats. According to poll experts, the recent rallies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief JP Nadda in the tribal belt and launch of the party's two Parivartan Yatras from tribal pockets indicate the party's efforts to woo tribals. The state elections will be held in two phases on November 7 and 17. In the 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly, 29 seats are reserved for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category, which comprises around 32 per cent of the state's population. The ruling Congress, which won 25 out of 29 ST-reserved seats in the 2018 assembly polls, is hopeful of bagging more seats than the last time, banking on its government's tribal wel

Chhattisgarh Assembly elections: BJP complains to state poll authority

The opposition BJP in Chhattisgarh has filed a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Raipur seeking action against 83 Congress candidates, claiming they have not furnished their criminal record details to the Election Commission within 48 hours of their selection. The Congress, however, claimed the BJP was levelling false allegations against the ruling party candidates. A Congress spokesperson said they have not given tickets to people with "criminal tendencies" and that they will fulfil the criteria laid down by the Election Commission. The Congress has so far declared candidates for 83 out of the total 90 seats in the state which will go to polls in two phases on November 7 and 17. In the complaint submitted to the CEO on Saturday, the BJP has cited the Supreme Court's order, according to which political parties must submit to the Election Commission the criminal antecedents of candidates within 48 hours of their selection, BJP's state legal cell convener Jaiprakash

Centre didn't play any role in bringing down Naxalites in Chhattisgarh: CM

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said the BJP-led Centre did not play any role in curbing Naxalism in the state as incidents of Naxal violence were on the rise under the party's "double engine" government between 2014 and 2018, and asserted that his dispensation's three-pronged strategy of development, trust and security resulted in pushing Maoists on backfoot. In an interview to PTI, Baghel also said his party's high command will decide whether he would continue to be the CM or not if the Congress retains power in the state after the next month's assembly elections. Congress is striving to retain power in Chhattisgarh for the second straight term in the two-phased elections to be held on November 7 and 17, riding high on the popularity of Baghel, who has a significant hold over the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and rural voters, and the government's welfare schemes focused on farmers, tribals and the poor. Refuting charges of scams being levelled by the BJP against his ...

State BJP president Arun Sao termed the incident as a targeted killing". His party workers will not be scared by such incidents and they will oust the Congress from power, he said.
