Germany loses 1 of 5 glaciers; scalding summer melts Southern Schneeferner

Scientists in Germany have stripped the Southern Schneeferner in the Alps of its status as glacier after extreme heat this summer hastened its demise. The announcement Monday by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences means Germany now has only four glaciers left. The Southern Schneeferner is an ice sheet that lies on a high plateau south of the country's highest peak, the Zugspitze. Researchers said that measurements in mid-September showed it has shrunk by half in the last four years. It is now little more than 2 metres thick in most areas, meaning it won't glide downhill anymore and therefore can't be considered a glacier, they said. "The remaining ice will melt away completely in the coming one to two years," the scientists said. Experts say many of Europe's glaciers are likely doomed to vanish in the coming decades due to human-caused climate change.

World Bank president Malpass says won't resign over climate change remark

World Bank President David Malpass said Friday he won't resign after coming under criticism for his remarks earlier this week regarding climate change. At an event sponsored by The New York Times on Tuesday, Malpass wouldn't answer directly when asked whether the burning of fossil fuels has contributed to global warming. Instead, he said, "I am not a scientist." In an interview with Politico Friday, Malpass said he wouldn't resign, and that he hasn't been asked to do so by any of the bank's member governments. He acknowledged he should have done a better job responding to questions on Tuesday, including from former Vice President Al Gore, who asked if he was a "climate denier." "When asked, are you a climate denier?' I should have said no," he said. But he said he did not plan to resign. Malpass also said the World Bank is taking a forceful leadership position on climate issues. Malpass was nominated to the position by former President Donald Trump in 2019, under the longstanding

Gates Foundation announces $1.27 bn aid for social issues, climate change

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced fresh financial assistance totalling USD 1.27 billion to address poverty and social inequalities at the end of its two-day event that saw the participation of over 300 young change-makers from across the globe. The announcement on the financial commitment came over a week after the Foundation in its annual Goalkeepers report noted that nearly every indicator of the UN sustainable development goals are off track for achieving them by 2030. Despite these challenges, the report highlighted opportunities to accelerate progress by investing in long-term solutions and innovative approaches to entrenched issues, including poverty, inequality, and climate change. The Foundation said on Tuesday that the funding will address overlapping global crises that have reversed the progress already made toward achieving the UN sustainable development goals (Global Goals). The two-day Goalkeepers event at the Lincoln Center in New York coincided with

US Senate ratifies international climate deal to limit use of refrigerants

In a major action to address climate change, the Senate has ratified an international agreement that compels the United States and other countries to limit use of hydrofluorocarbons, highly potent greenhouse gases commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning that are far more powerful than carbon dioxide. The so-called Kigali Amendment to the 1987 Montreal Protocol on ozone pollution requires participating nations to phase down production and use of hydrofluorocarbons, also known as HFCs, by 85% over the next 14 years, as part of a global phaseout intended to slow climate change. The Senate approved the treaty, 69-27, above the two-thirds margin required for ratification. HFCs are considered a major driver of global warming and are being targeted worldwide. Nearly 200 nations reached a deal in 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda, to limit HFCs and find substitutes more friendly to the atmosphere. More than 130 nations, including China, India and Russia, have formally ratified the agreeme

Biden pledges $2.9 bn in food security aid amid Ukraine war, climate change

President Joe Biden on Wednesday is announcing $2.9 billion in global food security aid to address shortages caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the effects of climate change. The White House says Biden will use his speech at the UN General Assembly to announce the funding, which includes $2 billion in direct humanitarian assistance through the United States Agency for International Development. The balance of the money will go to global development projects meant to boost the efficiency and resilience of the global food supply. This new announcement of $2.9 billion will save lives through emergency interventions and invest in medium to long term food security assistance in order to protect the world's most vulnerable populations from the escalating global food security crisis, the White House said.

Indian cos leading global fight against climate change: Mahindra Group MD

India can take the lead in the global fight against climate change as a number of homegrown companies are already leading the march, Mahindra Group MD & CEO, Anish Shah said on Tuesday. Global warming has resulted in a number of natural disasters and if it continues unabated it would lead to catastrophic consequences, he said while speaking at the FICCI LEADS 2022 event here. "We've seen our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) make some very bold statements, including getting to 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030, and that is really an acknowledgement of the fact that India can lead the world on this," Shah said. He further said, "a number of Indian companies have been leading at the world stage in this, as well by looking at new technologies, by looking at green materials coming in by decarbonising industries." Therefore, Shah said, "It's something that we cannot ignore and say we are a developed country or a developing country and it's for others to solve. We have to be able to ...
