Priyanka Gandhi didn't attend Ambani wedding: Congress retorts to claims

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra did not attend the Ambani wedding and was not even in India at that time, party leader Supriya Shrinate said on Tuesday, dismissing claims made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey in this regard. In a post on X, Shrinate accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP of lying. "Nishikant Dubey told a blatant lie in the Lok Sabha that Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi had attended Ambani's wedding," she said. "This is absolutely wrong, she did not go there at all. She was not even in the country, your Home Minister must know this -- he has an old and bad habit of keeping track of everyone," the Congress leader added. "The MP with a fake degree has a dirty disease of lying but Priyanka Gandhiji is not a Lok Sabha member yet, so taking her name is also a matter of privilege," she said. Participating in a debate on the Finance Bill in the Lok Sabha, Dubey had claimed that Gandhi attended the recent wedding of industrialist Mukesh Ambani's s

Govt bracing to 'gag' media through broadcast services bill, says Priyanka

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday accused the Modi government of preparing to "gag" digital media, social media, OTT platforms and those who write and speak in private capacity by bringing in the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, and said the country will not tolerate such actions. The Congress general secretary shared on X two quotes of Mahatma Gandhi (Young India, 1922) and that of Jawaharlal Nehru (March, 1940) in which they had stressed the importance of freedom of speech and press. "These two examples show that our citizens have not got freedom of speech and freedom of the press just like that. Millions of people have fought for it for years," Priyanka Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X. "Civil liberties and freedom of the press are the great legacy of our martyrs and freedom fighters," she said. In the history of independent India, no government could ever think of crushing the freedom of the citizens, Priyanka Gandhi said. "Today, on one side by the us

Modi govt cannot persist with 'cavalier implementation' of schemes: Cong

The Congress on Sunday attacked the Centre over the implementation of the PM-KUSUM initiative, launched in 2019 to increase the agricultural use of solar energy across the country, and said the Modi government cannot persist with such "cavalier" implementation of schemes. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has revealed some "startling facts" about PM-KUSUM, launched with "great fanfare" in 2019 to increase the agricultural use of solar energy across the country. "Here's the update from 2024, two years before completion target of 2026: Promise: Installation of 10,000 MW decentralized solar power plants on agriculture land. Reality: 256 MW has been installed (2.56% of target)," Ramesh said in a post on X. "Promise: Installation of 14 lakh solar pumps. Reality: 3.97 lakh solar pumps installed (about 28% of target)," he said. "Promise: Solarisation of 35 lakh additional pumps. Reality: 13,562 pumps have been .

India needs policy solution to mushrooming of coaching institutes: Congress

India needs a comprehensive policy solution to mushrooming of coaching institutes, the Congress said on Saturday and called for a revision of syllabi, more resources for all exam-takers and investments in the quality of education. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said data provided by the Department of Higher Education to the Rajya Sabha shows that GST collections from coaching institutes have risen rapidly between 2019 and 2024, from Rs 2,241 crore to Rs 5,517 crore. This represents an astonishing 146-per cent rise in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections, some part of which may be attributable to better enforcement, but it also likely comes from the growing market size, he said. "Worryingly, the GST collections of Rs 5,517 crore in FY24, collected at a rate of 18 per cent, suggests a market of Rs 30,653 crore for coaching institutes annually. This is an extremely worrying figure, since it corresponds to about two-thirds of the Union Budget's ...

Our govt has inked MoUs to make Rajasthan self-reliant in power: Minister

Rajasthan Minister of State for Energy Heeralal Nagar has said the government has signed agreements with central undertakings to make the state "self-reliant in the field of electricity". The minister made the remarks on Friday night while responding to a discussion in the Rajasthan assembly on the power situation in the state. "Our government has signed agreements (MoUs) with central undertakings to make the state self-reliant in the field of electricity," he said. "With this step taken and with a farsighted vision, there will be no shortage of electricity in Rajasthan in the coming times," Nagar asserted. Targeting the Congress, he alleged that due to the mismanagement of the previous government, the state had to face power crisis. During the previous government, power generation, transmission and distribution were neglected, Nagar claimed. The minister said power cuts in the state have reduced this year. By 2027, the state government will provide electricity to farmers in two

Congress slams NITI Aayog over shutdown of farm weather advisory offices

The Congress on Saturday alleged that 199 district agro-meteoreological units, which provided farmers at the block-level free-of-cost weather advisory services, were shut down as the NITI Aayog "misrepresented" their role to justify the decision. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared a media report on X which claimed that the farm weather advisory offices were shut in March this year as the NITI Aayog "misrepresented" their role and sought privatisation. "The India Meteorological Department shut down 199 district agro-meteoreological units (DAMUs). These agromet units provided all farmers at the block-level free-of-cost weather advisory services, and crucial information related to sowing, use of fertilisers, harvesting and storing crops," he said. Experts suggest that while the budget outlay for these units every year was around Rs 45 crore, the benefit was around Rs 15,000 crore, Ramesh pointed out. The shutdown was opposed by Union Minister Niti

Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill 'threat to freedom of speech': Cong

The Congress on Friday alleged that the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill was a direct threat to freedom of speech and the independent media and claimed that it would pave the way for "excessive surveillance" online. The Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera urged people to raise their voice against what he termed as "government's tyranny". While several people on social media have also been voicing their concern about certain reported provisions in the proposed law, the government has said the bill was still in the drafting stage and the stakeholders' consultation was underway. "The Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill is a direct threat to our freedom of speech and independent media," Khera alleged. "Here's why we all must raise our voice against the government's tyranny: Increased government control over content creators, from social media influencers to independent news outlets, threatens the independence of the press and restricts free speech," the
