Delhi pollution: Smoke intrusion from farm fires in Oct-Nov lowest in 4 yrs

Not only have the number of farm fires in Punjab and Haryana this season been the lowest since 2016, the national capital also witnessed the least smoke intrusion from stubble burning during October-November in four years, according to a Centre for Science and Environment analysis. Analysis of data from SAFAR, the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences' air quality forecasting agency, shows that smoke from farm fires contributed to PM2.5 pollution in Delhi on 53 days this year, starting October 12. The figure is lower than the previous three years when smoke intrusion was reported on 56-57 days but higher than the 2018 reading of 48 days. The highest contribution this year was 34 per cent on November 3. Last year, the share of farm fires in Delhi's PM 2.5 pollution peaked to 48 per cent on November 7. Court grants 7-day interim bail to Umar Khalid for sister's wedding

A court here on Monday granted one-week interim bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid, arrested in a case related to the northeast Delhi riots, for his sister's wedding. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted relief to Khalid from December 23 to 30. Khalid, a former student leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), had moved an application seeking two weeks' interim bail for his sister's wedding. Khalid was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly being a mastermind of the February 2020 riots, which had left 53 people dead and over 700 injured. The violence had erupted during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens. Khalid was arrested by Delhi Police in September 2020.

Metro operations to be curtailed on Grey Line on Tuesday for speed test

Delhi Metro operations on the Grey Line will not be available for an hour on November 22 to undertake speed trials on the Dwarka-Dhansa Bus Stand section, officials said on Monday. The Grey Line spans a little over five kilometres between Dwarka and Dhansa Bus Stand with four stations. "To undertake speed trials on the DwarkaDhansa Bus Stand section (Grey Line) for enhancement of speed and overall improvement in quality of train operations, services will not be available between Dwarka and Dhansa Bus Stand for one hour i.e, from 12:30 pm to 01:30 pm tomorrow," the DMRC said in a statement. Passengers are kindly advised to plan their journey accordingly, it said.

Delhi's air quality in 'very poor' category; AQI at 314: CPCB data

Air quality in the national capital was recorded in the 'very poor' category on Sunday with the 24-hour Air Quality Index settling at 314, according to Central Pollution Control Board data. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'. The maximum temperature in Delhi settled at 26.8 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal and the minimum at 9.6 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal, the India Meteorological Department said. The relative humidity oscillated between 90 per cent and 36 per cent, it said. The weatherman has predicted mainly clear skies on Monday with mist in the morning. The minimum and maximum temperatures in the national capital are likely to settle at 9 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius respectively. On Saturday, Delhi recorded its coldest morning of the season with a minimum temperature of 9 degrees Celsius -- three notches below .

Mother Dairy hikes full-cream milk price, token milk in Delhi-NCR

Mother Dairy has decided to hike prices of full-cream milk by Re 1 per litre and token milk by Rs 2 per litre in Delhi-NCR market with effect from Monday, citing rise in input cost. This is the fourth round of hike in milk prices this year by Mother Dairy, one of the leading milk suppliers in Delhi-NCR with volumes of more than 30 lakh litres per day. Mother Dairy has increased the prices of full-cream milk by Re 1 to Rs 64 per litre, a company spokesperson said. However, the company has not revised the prices of full-cream milk sold in 500 ml packs. Token milk (bulk vended milk) will be sold at Rs 50 per litre from Monday as against Rs 48 per litre now. The hike in milk prices will hit household budgets at a time when food inflation is already at a high level. Mother Dairy attributed the hike in prices to increase in its procurement cost of raw milk from dairy farmers. Delhi-NCR pollution: Farm fires due to failure of 4 state govts, says NHRC

After hearing the responses of the chief secretaries of Delhi and three neighbouring states on the pollution issue, the NHRC on Saturday said farmers are burning stubble "under compulsion" and it is due to the "failure" of the four state governments that stubble burning is happening. Alarmed over the rise in pollution in Delhi-NCR, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had recently asked the chief secretaries of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi to appear before it on November 10 to discuss the matter. The Commission, after considering the responses of the states concerned and the government of Delhi, and the deliberations thereon, is of the opinion that the "farmers are burning stubble under compulsion," the NHRC said in a statement on Saturday. International trade fair tickets to be available at 67 Delhi metro stations

Entry tickets for the India International Trade Fair to be held from November 14-27 will be available at 67 metro stations of the DMRC, officials said on Saturday. About 2,500 domestic and foreign exhibitors from several countries, including the UK and the UAE, will showcase their products during the 14-day fair at the Pragati Maidan here. India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), an arm of the commerce ministry, said this year, Bihar, Jharkhand and Maharashtra are the 'partner states' while Uttar Pradesh and Kerala are the 'focus states'. Overseas participation is from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belarus, Iran, Nepal, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE, and the UK.
