Delhi govt set to release Rs 140 crore EV subsidy dues after HC rap

The Delhi government will soon begin clearing pending electric vehicle (EV) subsidy dues of about Rs 140 crore, officials said on Monday. Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said the department will verify all subsidy applications to address the backlog, which has accumulated over two years. According to an official, the government is also preparing a portal for clearing the pending dues. The development comes in the aftermath of directions by the Delhi High Court. The court on September 3 ordered the Delhi government to take immediate steps to disburse the subsidies promised to customers for buying electric vehicles and said procedural hurdles cannot be used as a pretext to delay payments. A bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhayaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela noted that the government cannot hide behind the fact that the Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy of 2020 does not prescribe a timeline for disbursing the amount. Officials stated that the order will be followed,

UK team inspects Tihar jail amid India's extradition push for fugitives

Efforts to bring back high-profile economic offenders such as Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya from the United Kingdom have gained momentum with a team from Britain's Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) recently visiting Tihar Jail, an official said on Sunday. Flooded relief camps force evacuees to relocate again as Yamuna swells

Using boats in some areas and wading through knee-deep water in others, NDRF personnel rescued people stranded in flooded regions, including some in relief camps that were inundated due to the rising Yamuna levels. At some places in Yamuna Bazar and Mayur Vihar Phase I, it was a double whammy for people. They had to leave their homes due to flooding and then shift to shelters at government schools after the tents were also inundated. Visuals from the area showed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel wading through the Yamuna waters, using tractors and trolleys to move stranded residents and even cattle to safer places. The NDRF has so far evacuated around 1,150 people since Tuesday, including children, women and the elderly, officials said. Abujam Bijoy Kumar Singh, Commandant of the 16th Battalion of NDRF, said, "Evacuation has been completed from Yamuna Bazar and other vulnerable pockets. Delhi govt's PWD to get separate engineering cadre to accelerate works: CM

The Delhi Cabinet has approved the creation of a separate engineering cadre within the Public Works Department (PWD) to expedite construction projects and enhance accountability, officials said on Wednesday. The decision was made at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. With this decision, the Delhi Government will gain the authority to recruit engineers independently and fill vacant posts without delay, said an official statement. Following the decision, Gupta said the Delhi Government must quickly construct new infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art secretariat, mini-secretariats in all 11 districts, mandis, sports complexes, and other facilities. She noted that this would only be possible if Delhi had its own engineering cadre. "For the past 30 years, no decision was taken on this critical matter. That is why the Cabinet has now approved the creation of a separate cadre for engineers," she said. The department's engineering services were entirely .

With high volumes of water being released from Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages, the Yamuna River in Delhi crossed the evacuation mark for the first time this year and water entered several low-lying areas along its banks, forcing people to move to safer places. The water level was recorded at 206.03 metres at 4 PM on Tuesday at Delhi's Old Railway Bridge (ORB), which has been closed to traffic. Earlier in the day, the Yamuna had reached the level of 205.68 metres -- well above the danger mark of 205.33 metres -- at 6 AM. The highest flood level of the Yamuna is 208.66 metres, which was recorded in July 2023. As the water level rose, people living in low-lying areas were being evacuated by district authorities, and the ORB was temporarily closed for traffic movement. The warning mark for the city is 204.50 metres, the danger mark is 205.33 metres, and evacuation of people begins at 206.00 metres.
