Tornadoes in Ohio leave at least one dead, widespread damage

Ohio residents inspected destroyed homes and debris-strewn streets Tuesday after powerful tornadoes ripped through the US state overnight, killing at least one person and causing widespread damage and power outages. One twister that barreled through the city of Dayton left 80,000 people without power as day broke, the city's assistant fire chief Nicholas Hosford told ABC News. "We have homes flattened, entire apartment complexes destroyed, businesses throughout our community where walls have collapsed," Hosford said. "I don't know that any community that is fully prepared for this type of devastation," he added. That twister was one of many -- up to 52, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration -- that touched down Monday night and roared through eight US states. 21 civilians dead as regime pounds Syria's northwest: monitor

At least 21 civilians were killed on Tuesday as Syria's regime intensified its bombardment of the last jihadist stronghold in the country's northwest, a monitor said. Nine children were among the 21 killed in government fire on several towns in Idlib province and the countryside of neighbouring Aleppo, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Magisterial probe ordered into UP hooch tragedy

The Uttar Pradesh government Tuesday night ordered a magisterial probe into the Barabanki hooch tragedy which has so far claimed 14 lives. The inquiry will be headed by Barabanki chief development officer, an official spokesperson said. The incident has prompted the Yogi Adityanath government to order a high-level probe into all the angles, including the possibility of a "political conspiracy". At least 14 people died and around 40 others were taken ill after consuming spurious liquor in Barabanki district, officials said on Tuesday. While 12 people, including four members of a family, died in Barabanki, two others died at the trauma centre of a Lucknow hospital. Many are undergoing treatment at KGMU Hospital and the condition of two is critical, a hospital spokesperson told PTI. Maharashtra govt to set up fodder camps for sheep, goats

In view of severe drought in parts of Maharashtra, the state government Tuesday decided to set up separate fodder camps for sheep and goats in addition to other cattle heads in the affected areas. The decision was taken at a meeting of a Cabinet sub- committee chaired by Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Chandrakant Patil. At the meeting, it was also decided to provide drinking water to cattle camps through tankers. Talking to reporters, Patil said directives have been issued to local administration not to delay reimbursement of bills of fodder camps. At present, 4,920 villages and 10,506 hamlets are being supplied drinking water from 6,209 tankers. There are 1,501 cattle camps in the drought-affected areas housing 10.4 lakh big and small animals, he said. Patil said for the first time separate fodder camps will be set up for sheep and goats. So far, 34 lakh farmers have been given Rs 2,200 crore for crop losses, the minister said. He also gave details of money provided .

Delhi policeman injured in accident in Rohini

A 52-year-old assistant sub-inspector was injured on Tuesday after his motorcycle was hit by a speeding canter-truck and the two-wheeler was found about 100-feet away from the site of the accident in Rohini, police said. The injured has been identified as Ramphal, who is posted at the Bawana police station that falls under outer-north district, they said. The victim was wearing helmet and was on duty at the time of accident, police said. The incident took place around 7 PM. His motorcycle was hit by a speeding canter-truck at a T-point of Heliport road. The two-wheeler was found 100 metres away from the accident spot. Surat tragedy: Coaching institutes in Delhi's Karol Bagh to be surveyed

North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has decided to survey coaching institutes operating in public buildings in the Karol Bagh Zone to assess compliance of civic and building safety norms, following the devastating blaze in Surat that killed 20 students at a coaching complex. An official of the civic body said a team has already been constituted and the survey will begin in a few days. "The team will be led by the Deputy Health Officer (DHO) of the zone. Members of the team will visit premises of the coaching institutes and assess compliance of norms. They will also ask if the fire safety norms are in place with the owners of buildings housing such institutes," the senior official told PTI. Quake-damaged port on China-Nepal border to resume cargo service

A key land port on the China-Nepal border will resume its cargo service Wednesday, four years after it was closed due to the 2015 massive earthquake, according to officials. Zham port, the most important highway port on the border of China and Nepal, cleared more than 90 per cent of trade between the two countries before the earthquake devastated Nepal and some border areas in Tibet in April, 2015. The earthquake caused severe damage to the port, roads, bridges and other facilities, forcing the port to close. The port will resume its cargo services from Wednesday, Tashi Gyatso, a spokesperson of the Tibetan regional government, said in a press conference on Tuesday. NGT forms committee to assess fine from thermal power stations in Singrauli, Sonbhadra

The National Green Tribunal has formed a committee to assess and suggest compensation from thermal power stations operating in Singrauli and Sonbhadra districts in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh for causing air and water pollution. A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel constituted the committee comprising representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Forests (MoEF), Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) and the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) to look into the issue. 12 dead as vehicles collide in Jodhpur

Twelve people, including two children, died when two vehicles collided head-on in Rajasthan's Jodhpur district, police said on Tuesday. The incident occurred near Agolai village in Balesar area, 73 km west of Jodhpur city, on Monday night. The collision was so intense that the heads of two passengers were severed and some of them got badly stuck in the mangled vehicles, an officer said. Minor fire in school; none hurt

A minor fire occurred Monday in the computer room of a school here in Maharashtra, but nobody was injured, a fire brigade official said. No student was present in Shree Mavli Mandal School, located in Charai area, at the time of the incident which occurred this morning. Three killed as ambulance rams into truck

Three persons, including a two-year-old boy, were killed while three others were seriously injured Tuesday when an ambulance carrying them rammed into a truck here, police said. The accident took place when the ambulance was carrying the injured boy Rishi Kumar to Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, Chakeri Station House Officer Ranjeet Rai said. Rishi had sustained serious injuries after falling from the roof of his house in Banda and was referred to LLR Hospital from Banda Medical College.
