Many homeless as flash flood hits Tripura

Heavy rains leading to flash flood have left hundreds of houses submerged in North Tripura, Unakoti and Dhalai districts of Tripura. More than 1000 families have reportedly been affected and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is working hard to evacuate members of these families with their belongings to safer places.The flood was mainly after the water level of river Juri and river Kakti started rising and came close to the danger level.Around nine speed boats, 40 rescue boats, many of which brought from other areas, were deployed by the state revenue department to evacuate those stuck inside their homes in submerged places.Apart from these, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), firefighter team, district and state administration have also joined the rescue operations. Himachal Pradesh: Kolkata trekker dies in Kinnaur

One Kolkata-based trekker died because of bad weather condition and lack of oxygen in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur area on Saturday.On Saturday, the Kinnaur district police received two different information regarding missing of seven trekkers in a group and four trekkers in another group.According to the chief secretary of the Himachal Pradesh government, out of the seven trekkers in the first group, one died because of bad weather condition and lack of oxygen and another in serious condition was airlifted by the helicopter of Indian Army for treatment in Rampur local hospital in Shimla.The remaining five trekkers are being rescued by the quick reaction team of the disaster management body of the government.Chief secretary said that a team of Indo Tibet Border Police was sent to locate and rescue another group of trekkers in Chitkul area of the Kinnaur district, but due to bad weather the four members of the group could not be located and the team returned back.The chief secretary of ..

Indonesia: Australia flights cancelled after volcano erupts in Bali

Bali's airport on Saturday cancelled flights to and from Australia following an eruption of Mount Agung volcano that spread ash over the south of the Indonesian island.After quoting the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), Al Jazeera confirmed that the eruption on Friday night lasted for four minutes and 30 seconds and spread lava and incandescent rocks over three kilometres radius from the crater."The status of Mount Agung remains Alert (level III) with the recommendation of the community/climbers and tourists are prohibited from carrying out activities within a radius of four km from the peak," the agency said in a statement.Ash fell over dozens of villages, but no casualties were reported and no evacuations took place.Some flights were cancelled to and from Australia after the eruption, but normal operations have since resumed.Mount Agung, which stands at 3,031 metres (9944 feet) tall, has now erupted three times in May with six days between each eruption, ...

Heavy rain in Tripura, 700 people take shelter in relief camps

At least 739 people were rendered homeless and forced to take shelter in relief camps across Tripura due to heavy rain and thunderstorms since Friday, an official said. However, there was no report of any casualty. "North Tripura, Unakoti and Dhalai districts have been affected," the head of the State Disaster Management Authority, Sarat Das, told PTI. The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) in a report said, out of the 739 people, who are sheltered in various relief camps, 358 people are from Unakoti district and 381 from North Tripura district. Delhi Fire Department to conduct audit of coaching institutes in national capital

The Delhi Fire service is planning to conduct an audit of all coaching institutes running in the national capital from Monday to avert Surat-like fire tragedy in which at least 22 students died, officials said. However, small coaching institutes, which are functioning in buildings below 15 metres, do not come directly under the fire department's jurisdiction, a senior official. "Small coaching institutes do not come directly under our jurisdiction, but still we will start from Monday inspections of coaching institutes which are functioning in buildings above 15 metres and facts will be checked whether they have applied for license and if not, notice will be issued against them," Delhi chief Fire officer Atul Garg said. Surat coaching centre blaze: One arrested, two fire officers suspended

Afghanistan: 13 people dead due to flash floods in Ghor

At least 13 people have lost their lives until now due to flash floods in Afghanistan's Ghor, said provincial governor Ghulam Nasir Khazih on Saturday.Apart from the deaths, over 100 houses were destroyed due to the heavy downpour which has lashed the province since Thursday, reports Xinhua.The floods largely damaged the provincial capital Firoz Koah and the neighbouring Tolak and Shahrak districts where farmlands have been destroyed, Khazih said while talking to reporters.The Afghan leader urged national and international aid agencies to assist with the humanitarian situation resulting from the floods.

Cotton bales gutted in fire at godown

A large quantity of waste cotton bales were gutted in a fire that broke out in a godown here Saturday, police said. The people nearby saw smoke emerging from the warehouse and alerted its workers and management, the police said. Seeing the flames, nearly 30 workers in the godown rushed out to safety, even as fire and rescue personnel arrived at the spot, they said. Three fire-tenders doused the flames after nearly a five-hour struggle. The reason for the blaze and the estimated loss were being ascertained, they added.

NHRC notice to Guj govt over death of children in Surat fire

The NHRC Saturday sent a notice to the Gujarat government over the fire tragedy in Surat in which 22 students died in a massive blaze at a commercial complex in Sarthana area of the city, officials said. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also observed that mere announcement of compensation to the aggrieved families cannot be a solution to such kind of hazards. Three of the 22 students who died in the fire in the ill-fated Takshila Complex on Friday had appeared for the Class 12 Board examinations and had cleared them comfortably, as per results that were declared Saturday. Among the dead, 18 are girls, the youngest being 15 years of age and the eldest just 22, police said. The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident, it said in a statement. US: 10 injured in shooting incident outside bar in New Jersey

At least 10 people were injured in a shooting incident outside a bar in New Jersey on Saturday.The incident happened at about 12:25 am (local time) on the Brunswick Avenue of Trenton city, reported SputnikTrenton police spokesman Captain Stephen Varn said that five men and five women injured in the gunfire were rushed to the hospital. Afghan officials say heavy flooding kills 24 people

The Afghan government says at least 24 people have been killed and 11 others injured in the past month as a new wave of heavy rains and flooding has swept parts of the country. A statement released Saturday by the Afghan Ministry for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs says flooding has affected six of Afghanistan's 34 provinces, including the capital, Kabul. Around 500 people were rescued in central Bamyan province's Sheber district, according to the ministry. Nationwide, floods have destroyed over 220 homes this month and partially damaged 116 more, it added. Heavy snowfall across Afghanistan this winter had cut off many areas. So far this year, around 150 people have died as heavy rains and flooding swept away homes in different provinces.
