Hundreds stranded as rains lash Japan's Yakushima

Over 260 people, mostly hikers, have been stranded in Japan's Yukushima as severe rains continue to lash the town since Saturday.The area received more than 400 millimetres of rain on Saturday alone, which is what the town would normally receive in all of May. Furthermore, 56 millimetres of fresh rain was recorded early on Sunday, according to NHK.This has led to fears of mudslides, with the Japanese Meteorological Agency labelling it as a once in a 50-year event. No casualties have been reported yet.Rescue workers from the Ground Self-Defence Force and Coast Guard will be deploying helicopters to evacuate the stranded, along with undertaking search operations with them.

29 hurt after trains collide in Philippines

At least 29 passengers were injured after a Light Rail Transit Line 2 train rammed into a parked train between two stations at Quezon City here on Saturday night.The injured were rushed to hospitals as authorities launched investigations into the mishap.Some of the debris landed on the road below after the accident, Xinhua reported while citing local media.

Japan issues warning over probable volcano eruption

Japan's Meteorological Agency on Sunday issued a warning over a possibility of volcanic Mount Hakone erupting.Along with this, the agency also raised its alert level to two on a scale of five, according to NHK. The step was taken after the number of volcanic earthquakes near the mountain increased on Saturday.Furthermore, the agency warned that large volcanic rocks could fall at Owakudani, which is an area around a crater created during Mount Hakone's last eruption around 3000 years ago.Travel near the crater has been restricted in the wake of the warning, while Hakone Ropeways operator stated that services would be suspended on Sunday.

Russia: Sukhoi Superjet 100 aborts takeoff over hydraulic failure

An Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet 100 bound for Moscow was forced to abort takeoff here after its hydraulic system reportedly malfunctioned."Flight SU1389 SSJ-100 aborted takeoff at a speed of 55 kilometres per hour (34 miles per hour) due to the failure of the first hydraulic system," Sputnik quoted a source as saying.The passengers on board refused to continue the flight, the source added.This comes after an Aeroflot plane - of the same make - caught fire upon making an emergency landing in Moscow earlier this month. The plane reportedly faced an onboard electronics failure merely 30 minutes after taking off. At least 41 people out of the 78 on board lost their lives in the mishap.

Cyclone Fani: Odisha govt distributes free sanitary napkins in Puri

Elderly woman killed, four injured in road accident in J-K's Kathua

A 70-year-old woman was killed and four others were injured Saturday when their car skidded off the road and hit the roadside safety wall in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The accident took place apparently due to rash driving near RTO office, Kathua, along the Jammu-Pathankot highway, a police official said. The car was on way to Pathankot in Punjab, he added. Sheela Devi died on the spot, while Sourav, Meena Kumari, Phani and Sunita Mahajan, all residents of Pathankot, were critically injured in the accident, he said. The official said the injured were provided initial treatment at the district hospital, Kathua, and later referred to Pathankot. Meanwhile, the body of a truck driver was fished out from Chenab river along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban district in the afternoon. Water crisis returns to haunt Latur

With the onset of summer, the water crisis has returned to haunt the people of Latur. What further worsens the situation is the scanty rain the district receives every year. People's only source of water is a tanker which reaches them, but not so frequently.Most of the villages in the district are faced with water crisis - the difference is only of degrees. Latur was also the first city to get 'water train' in 2016, but in vain. Fodder camps for cattle set up in drought affected Aurangabad

As the drought is worsening in Maharashtra, the government on Saturday set up a fodder camp aka 'Chara Chawani' for cattle in the drought-hit Aurangabad district's Lasur village.Speaking to ANI, a local said that the more than 6000 cattle have been taken care of by the authorities in the shelter home by providing them food and water. Five including 4 kids die as bus overturns on Lucknow-Agra expressway

At least five persons including four children died and 19 others sustained injuries, when the bus in which they were travelling overturned here on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway. According to police, the accident occurred near Devkhari village in Bangarmau area when a tractor suddenly appeared before the bus which was travelling at a high speed. The driver swerved to avoid hitting the tractor but lost control of the vehicle, SHO of Bangarmau Police Station Arvind Kumar Singh said, adding that the bus was on its way to Madhubani in Bihar from Gurgaon, Haryana. "Of the five passengers who died, four are children. The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained," he said. The injured have been sent to Trauma centre in Lucknow and to district hospital in Unnao. The dead bodies have been sent for post-mortem, police said.

Five people lost their lives and more than 30 were injured in a bus accident on the Lucknow-Agra expressway on Saturday.The accident happened near Devkhari village which comes under the Bangarmau police station.The incident happened when a bus carrying passengers from Delhi to Bihar overturned after ramming into a tractor trolley.More than a dozen injured people have been referred to the Lucknow Trauma centre for further treatment.Further details in this regard are awaited.

5.6 magnitude earthquake jolts Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Ritcher Scale rattled Indonesia on Saturday morning, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).The quake occurred at 8:51 pm (local time) and struck at a depth of 10 kilometers.There was no immediate report of damage of property or casualties as a result of the quake.Indonesia is highly susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis as it lies in the highly seismic 'Ring of Fire', an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean.In December 2004, a devastating 9.1 magnitude quake off the Sumatra island triggered strong tsunami waves in the Indian Ocean, killing over two lakh people in dozens of countries, including many in India and Sri Lanka.

Loco pilot applies emergency brakes to avert major mishap

The loco pilot averted a major mishap by applying emergency brakes on time as some miscreants had kept iron pieces on railways tracks here, said Pune Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Milind Deuskar."Iron pieces were found twice on tracks between Rukadi and Hatkalangane railway stations in the past 10 days. Loco pilot saw it at the right time and pulled emergency brakes, averting a major mishap," Deuskar said on Friday."In December last year, some children placed steel pieces on rail track in Vathar, derailing 6 wheels of the engine. 8-10 such incidents have taken place so far. Loco pilots averted them but it is not actually their work. They have other works and we cannot depend on them for safety," he added.

6.0 magnitude quake rocks Papua New Guinea

An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale rocked the New Ireland region late on Friday night, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS)."Prelim M6.0 Earthquake New Ireland region, Papua New Guinea May-17 22:37 UTC," the agency tweeted.The quake struck at a depth of 27.4 kilometres. Boeing completes 737 Max software update

Boeing has announced that it has finally completed the software update for the 737 Max planes that had caused deadly crashes in the recent past.The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is yet to provide certification and Boeing is providing additional information related to how pilots interact with airplane controls and displays in different flight scenarios, according to an official release.To date, the company has flown the 737 MAX with updated MCAS software for more than 360 hours on 207 flights. Boeing says that the 737 Max with the updated MCAS software will be one of the safest airplanes ever to fly.

South Central Railway launches 3 new trains from Hyderabad

Three new trains with modern facilities and enhanced women security measures have been launched by the South Central Railway here.The new multi-modal transport system (MMTS) trains with 12 coaches will accommodate around 1,150 sitting and around 4000 standing passengers."In 2003, the government had launched MMTS trains with 9 coaches.
