Delhi HC refuses to stay process for Christian student's admission in St Stephen's

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to intervene and stay the process of interview panel in connection with the admission of Christian students in the St Stephen's College.Justice Anu Malhotra while refusing to intervene in the matter observed that she did not find anything wrong in the interview process as the institute is seeking to maintain itself as they want it to be."I do not consider it appropriate to stay the interview process, the court said," Justice Malhotra said.The court's order came on a petition filed by three teachers - NP Ashley, Abhishek Singh and Nandita Narain challenging the decision to have an additional Christian member nominated by the institution's supreme council to be a part of the interview panel for admission of students."The Stephen's teachers were represented by Sunil Mathews, Sabah Iqbal Siddiqui and Babita, who argued that the decision of the Supreme Council went against the constitution of Stephen's college which expressly prohibited ...

Centre launches web portal to streamline release of scholarship grants to tribal students

Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda launched a web portal on Wednesday to streamline and expedite the process of releasing scholarship grants directly into bank accounts of beneficiary students. The Tribal Affairs Ministry hopes that the "DBT Tribal" portal, where states can upload data related to beneficiaries, raise queries and give feedback, will reduce the chances of duplication of beneficiary and manipulation. The ministry has been running various schemes to bridge the gap between Scheduled Tribe (ST) and general category students. The two main scholarship schemes -- pre-matric and post-matric -- are being implemented through states. For higher education, the Centre runs "Top Class Education For ST Students" scheme in which 246 prestigious institutions, such as IITs and IIMs, participate. Around 1,000 students avail benefits under the scheme every year. For Mphil and PhD programmes, there is a national fellowship scheme for 750 beneficiaries. The government also runs a ...

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to stay the interview process for admission of Christian students in Delhi University's St Stephen's college. The court said it did not consider it appropriate to stay the interview process. "I am not inclined to grant the stay.... I do not consider it appropriate to stay the interview process. They are seeking to maintain their institution as they want it to be," Justice Anu Malhotra said. The interview process is scheduled to commence next week. Delhi HC seeks Centre, DU stand on plea challenging varsity's new admission norms

The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought response of the Centre and the Delhi University on two separate pleas challenging its new admission criteria for under graduate courses. Both the petitions have contended that students have been caught unaware as the eligibility criteria for some courses have been changed. The petitions claimed that change in the eligibility criteria in both the courses -- B.Com (Hons) and BA (Hons) in Economics -- is illegal and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution as it was done arbitrarily, without any prior notice. While one of the petitions came up for hearing before a bench of Justices Anu Malhotra and Talwant Singh, the other was heard by single judge, Justice Anu Malhotra. Sitharaman, Jaishankar to be conferred Distinguished Alumni Award by JNU

Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will be conferred the Distinguished Alumni Award by Jawaharlal Nehru University. The Executive Council of JNU approved a proposal to bestow the award on Finance Minister Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, during the third convocation of the varsity to be held in August this year, Pramod Kumar, the university registrar, said. Kerala to have 'Open University' on the lines of IGNOU

The Kerala government has decided to start an 'Open University' on the lines of IGNOU, state Higher Education Minister K T Jaleel said Wednesday. After perusing the report submitted by Prof Prabash, special officer appointed to study the feasibility of the project, Jaleel said the University will start functioning from the academic year 2020-21. "There is no additional liability for the government. The Open University will make use of the staff and facilities of the distance education departments of various universities," Jaleel told media here.
