DoE organises draw to fill seats in entry level classes in schools

The Directorate of Education (DoE) Tuesday organised a computerised draw to fill vacant seats in the entry level classes in private schools under the EWS/DG category. There were close to 14,000 vacant seats in 1700 private unaided recognised schools in the national capital. The draw for admission to nursery, KG and Class 1 was held for 8200 seats for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Disadvantaged Group (DG) category.

SC to hear plea on extension of deadline for PG medical seats

A plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking a direction to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to extend the deadline for post-graduate medical courses till June 17, as nearly 450 to 500 seats are yet to be filled.

Over 3 lakh students register on DU's website for admissions till now

Over three lakh students have registered on the Delhi University's website for admissions in undergraduate courses till Tuesday, the varsity said. The university started registrations on May 30 for undergraduate courses and the admission process will end on June 14. The first cut-off list is likely to be released on June 20. Till now, 3,00,410 students have registered and 1,89,637 have made payments, the varsity said. Out of the total number of registrations, 1,16,112 aspirants are from the unreserved category, 37,079 from other backward classes, 26,285 from scheduled castes, 5,332 from scheduled tribes and 4,829 from the economically weaker section (EWS), it said. This year, the varsity has effected a 10 per cent increase in seats for the EWS and there will be a rise of close to 6,000 seats, taking the total number of seats for undergraduate courses to 62,000. There will be separate cut-offs for the category.

JNUSU alleges entrance question paper copied

The JNUSU Tuesday alleged that the questions in the entrance examination for the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning (CESP), MA programme, were copied from substandard websites. Chintamani Mahapatra, Rector-I of Jawaharlal Nehru University said, "Appropriate steps will be taken to examine the allegations and take necessary action as per the findings". The JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) said it is "appalling and disappointing" since maximum questions in the examination held on May 27 had been copy pasted from some websites "The JNUSU considers this as well-planned move by the University administration and the CESP Acting Chairperson Pradipta Chaudhary to not only degrade the quality of the centre but also to filter in applicants that align to their thinking and ways," the JNUSU said. Singapore-based BIGO LIVE Tuesday said it has launched a new 'Education Channel' to enable users to leverage its live streaming platform for imparting training and education. "The platform plans to leverage the potential of live streaming and BIGO LIVE existing technological infrastructure to create a unique teaching pedagogy accessible to all. The channel has already initiated English and soft skill training classes through live streaming and aims to expand in other subjects gradually," a statement said. HRD minister directs institutions to fill up vacancies to increase education quality

HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' directed institutions, including the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and the Central Board of Secondary Education to fill up the vacancies in order to increase quality and efficiency, the ministry said. Sisodia announces School of Football Excellence in CR Park

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia Tuesday announced the construction of a state-of-the-art football ground in CR Park considering the popularity of the sport in the area, a statement said. He visited SPM Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in CR Park with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj and announced that the football ground will be built to utilise the vast empty space between the old and the newly constructed buildings. Internal marks for SSC students: Maha to take call

The Maharashtra government will discuss with the Centre the demand raised by parents of the students of class 10 to not consider internal marks scored by their counterparts from other boards while securing admission in class 11. A delegation of parents met state Education Minister Vinod Tawde and complained of their wards failing to secure admission in their desired colleges because of the state's decision to do away with the practice of adding the internal marks scored in Marathi and other subjects in the total score. AISA meets DU officials over discrepancy in application fee for OBC candidates

The Left-backed AISA Tuesday met Delhi University officials to highlight 'discrepancy' in the application fee for OBC applicants for postgraduate courses, who are supposed to pay the same amount as applicants from unreserved category. All India Students' Association (AISA) president Kanwalpreet Kaur said the application fee for Other Backward Class (OBC) candidates applying for postgraduate courses is Rs 750, the same as unreserved category. The application fee for candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Persons With Disabilities (PwD) and Economically Weaker Sections is Rs 300. Kaur said OBC candidates should also be paying the same fee as SC, ST, PwD and EWS candidates. Maha to develop irrigation dept guest houses on PPP basis

The Maharashtra cabinet Tuesday approved a policy to develop Irrigation department's guest houses, additional land and vacant colonies near dams on the Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis. The government is looking forward to generate funds by leasing out these properties, which would be utilised for maintenance of irrigation projects in the state, a statement from Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said, adding that this project is expected to boost tourism. There are about 146 guest houses of Irrigation department in the state. The council of minister also approved setting up two self-financed universities in Pune and Nagpur. As per the government, Shri Balaji university will be set up in Pune while Ramdev Baba varsity will be founded in Nagpur. Through these two varsities, students from Nagpur and Pune can gain knowledge in various streams. "Apart from social reservations, 40 per cent seats will be reserved for students from Maharashtra," the statement said.
