Japanese auto major Toyota will launch electric vehicles in India, as part of its multi-technology approach towards combating carbon emission in the country, which EVs alone cannot tackle, according to top officials of the company's Indian arm. China's electric vehicle major BYD is keen to have manufacturing operations in India as soon as 'all factors' suggest a 'go ahead' and the plan is under constant evaluation, according to a top official of the company's Indian arm. Commercial vehicle maker SML Isuzu has forayed into the electric vehicle business with the launch of Hiroi.ev platform for commercial buses that are expected to be rolled out in the April-June quarter this year, a senior company official said. Electric vehicle sales in India crossed 14.08 lakh units in 2024, achieving a market penetration rate of 5.59 per cent, up from 4.44 per cent in the previous year, Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy said on Saturday. The minister asserted that the upward trend in EV adoption underscores the growing public trust in electric vehicles, as well as the positive impact of government incentives and industry innovation. "Total EV sales in calendar year 2024 reached 14,08,245 - a penetration of 5.59 per cent, up from 10,22,994 in calendar year 2023, which stood at 4.44 per cent," the minister for Heavy Industries and Steel said at a Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) event here. He observed that despite global uncertainties, the country's automotive sector has continued on a growth trajectory. Vietnam's electric vehicle maker VinFast Auto on Saturday said its two electric SUVs -- VF 7 and VF 6 -- will hit the Indian market later this year to mark its foray into the country, which it says has a huge growth potential. Indian firms in the electronics, solar, and electric vehicle (EV) sectors are experiencing delays and disruptions due to China's restrictions on export of key inputs and machinery, economic think tank GTRI said on Thursday. It said the curbs could be China's response to India's restrictions on Chinese investments and visas. "This also signals deeper geopolitical tensions and trade war. We hope India-specific restrictions go away soon as they will also hurt China," Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) Founder Ajay Srivastava said. He added that while these measures impact India's electronics, solar, and EV sectors, they are also harmful to China's own manufacturing and exports.
